Montrose Shake Shack Takes Shape, Adding More Spice to Houston’s Gourmet Burger Wars

Will In-N-Out Finally Drop the Drama and Follow?

It’s official. Houston’s hippest neighborhood is getting its very own Shake Shack. And the gourmet burger chain didn’t just shake hands over the Montrose deal — the building permit has been filed. It’s time to sizzle.

PaperCity first reported that the Burger King at 1002 Westheimer would be transformed into the home of a certain smashed-patty favorite way back in February. That prime space next to Blacksmith is going from the old Home of the Whopper to ShackBurger land.

Shake Shack Montrose’s opening date hasn’t been set yet, but this is a great time to be alive if you love Danny Meyer’s trendsetting burger chain.

Five months ago, PaperCity revealed that Shake Shack inked a 15-year lease on the 0.7 acres. The New York-based burger pioneer is going for a hat trick — to start. This marks the third time it’s laid brick-and-mortar roots in Space City.

Lines wrapped around the block when the first Shake Shack opened its doors in The Galleria in 2016. Salivating fans had to wait another two years to slurp up hand-spun milkshakes at a new location. The Rice Village Shake Shack opened last February.

There’s also a Shake Shack stand in Minute Maid Park, a hotspot for diehard Houston Astros fans. And suite and Diamond Club seat holders can now get salty fries delivered to them during games.

Shake Shack tailors a few menu items to its locale. The top Texas offering? The Lockhart Link Burger with a griddled Kreuz Market jalapeno cheese sausage link atop a cheeseburger slathered in ShakeSauce.

The burger wonderland has quite the fan following, but it faces some serious rivals. Austin-approved Hopdoddy has hopped around Houston, opening up a restaurant in River Oaks District and Rice Village where it takes on Shake Shack in direct gourmet burger competition.

And who knows? Maybe In-N-Out will finally get to work on the spot it’s snapped up at 8373 Westheimer.

Any way you slice it, there are tons of cult classic burgers to choose from. We’re not telling you which to pick. Just give ’em all a fair shake.
