Hot New Restaurant Closes After Just Three Months: Southern Spot With Plenty of Fanfare Mysteriously Shutters With No Warning

The owners of Southern BOI Cafe thought they had found themselves in a League of Their Own. But while it seemed early on that the down-home cooking restaurant in League City had knocked it out of the park, things didn’t quite work out. To say the least.

The go-to spot for crispy fried okra and farmhouse mac and cheese is already gone.

Southern BOI Cafe is already shuttered for good, just three months after opening on November 10. It’s Oh, Boi for many confused and disappointed fans. Not to mention the restaurant’s staff.

A Southern BOI Cafe employee named Maddie found out that the restaurant was suddenly closing for good in a text message just five minutes before Southern Boi posted the news to its own Facebook page on Friday. The Facebook post noting the employee’s late notice triggered its own debate on social media on what responsibilities restaurants have to their workers.

The cafe’s run lasted from November 10 to February 16, just three short months. Even in a restaurant business that often has razor thin margins, that’s a remarkably short tenure. It’s not yet clear why Southern BOI shuttered so abruptly.

“We thank everyone who supported us on this short but incredible journey. We hope y’all loved the food as much as we loved y’all,” the restaurant’s Facebook post reads.

Located at 109 Meadow Parkway, just off FM 578, BOI Cafe brought Southern eats like thick-cut pork chops with sweet potato noodles, chicken fried chicken, pecan pie monkey bread, and homemade banana pudding to the table. Co-owner Jana Salyers and her husband Robert Salyers, co-owner and head chef, sourced many of their ingredients locally. Their beef came fresh from 44 Farms and the microgreens were sourced from Jeff’s Aquaponics and Farm in Santa Fe. All of the restaurant’s goods were made from scratch, even down to the salad dressings.

BOI’s seafood — save for the catfish — was sourced from Katie’s Seafood in Galveston. Galveston holds a special place in the Salyers’ hearts. The BOI in the restaurant’s name stands for Born On the Island.

PaperCity reached out to Southern BOI Cafe’s owners, but has yet to hear back. For now, this sudden closure remains something of a mystery.
