A Houston Neighborhood Gets Its Own Little Restaurants Weeks: Uptown Dining Deals Beckon

BY // 06.12.18

You no longer have to wait for Houston Restaurant Weeks to enjoy special dining deals. The new Uptown Summer Dine Around restaurant series brings its own bargains earlier.

Uptown Summer Dine Around highlights 13 district spots with special menus and deals through June 30.

The participating restaurants are La Table, Etoile Cuisine et Bar, Morton’s the Steakhouse, Moxie’s Grill and Bar, The Oceanaire Seafood Room, McCormick and Schmick’s, Cafe Annie, Piatto Ristorante, Post Oak Grill, Willie G’s, Songkran Thai Kitchen, Luby’s and Berryhill Baja Grill. It’s a parade of price points and flavors.

All menus are listed on the event site, with restaurants offering two- or three-course lunches, dinners or both. Lunches starts at $20 and dinners run from $35 to $45. Uptown will make a donation to the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation for summer reading for every meal that is purchased.

“She was a resident of the Uptown area. She and President Bush would come into some of the restaurants. Her literacy program — we thought it would be a great match,” Uptown’s Delia Mizwa tells PaperCity.

Songkran Thai Kitchen’s chef Jett Hurapan thought of Barbara Bush while crafting the Dine Around’s special menus. “She’s eaten at our restaurant four or five times a year. She loved the Bangkok fish. We honor her with that fish,” Hurapan says. And he hasn’t forgotten the former First Lady’s fondness for creme brûlée.

The chef invites all diners to play around with the dishes at the traditional Thai comfort food spot. “Houston foodies have their own opinions,” Hurapan laughs. “They love their three-course dinners.”

Uptown backers want Summer Dine Around to draw guests old and new.  “We have so many great restaurants in Uptown, new restaurants and staples,” Mizwa says.

Uptown put the passion project together in a number of weeks, with 13 restaurants able to participate. The neighborhood offers many more foodie options outside the list, and Mizwa hopes those will gain more exposure, too.

Staycationers and business people alike can swing by these restaurants until the end of the month — and get a deal.

“I think it’s a great, wonderful variety of the options that are available in Uptown. Whatever you’d like at whatever price point,” Mizwa says. “There’s seafood, steaks. All kinds of different cultures — you can find it all here. Uptown is a great place where cultures and food mix.

La Table chef Vincente Celeste is a big Uptown believer.

“I live and work in the neighborhood. I will always try to do anything to support our neighborhood and to help distinguish ourselves,” Celeste says. “I think the foodie scene in Houston has become very progressive and I think what Uptown brings is a sense of class and tradition.”

La Table’s food strategy is a focus on fresh ingredients, especially fish, and simplicity. Summer Dine Around is no exception. Celeste’s particularly proud of one of the first course dinner menu options, a unique gazpacho made from ripe cherries.

Get ready. Things are looking up in Uptown.
