Dallas’ Art Ball is One Fashion Forward Museum Party — With Wild Bidding to Boot

Shadow Dancers and a Dream Trip Add Extra Sizzle

BY // 05.30.19

Guests donning an eclectically elegant mix of fashion-forward evening looks congregated around a moss-covered bar during the cocktail hour of Art Ball 2019. In this section of the tent, erected adjacent to the Dallas Museum of Art for its 54th annual fundraising gala, Todd Fiscus set an ethereal scene with greenery, simple glassware and organic accents that carried through to the main ballroom, which was covered in a wash of soft pink light and canopies of hanging foliage.

This year’s Art Ball theme, Form & Function: A Celebration of Craftsmanship Throughout the Collection, was thoughtfully applied throughout the evening by co-chairs Lindsey Collins and Amanda Shufeldt, who said it was about celebrating the artistry of creation in its many forms, as well as a nod to the abundance of works in the Museum’s permanent collection.

Once everyone was seated for dinner, a video welcome message morphed into a choreographed shadow dance performed behind the screen by Los Angeles group, Eclipse. A deliciously decadent four-course dinner by Cassandra Fine Catering consisted of citrus-cured salmon with crème fraîche, caviar, and crispy potato; pan-roasted merluza with eggplant, tomato conserva, and watercress butter sauce.

As dessert was being served (passion fruit tart with mandarin gel, milk chocolate mousse, and dark chocolate bittersweet apricot truffle), auctioneer and Christie’s vice president Robbie Gordy took the stage to kick off the anticipated live auction, which offered priceless opportunities including a safari adventure in Kenya, a custom party at the DMA, and a New York Fashion Week experience with Moda Operandi.

The shadow dancers returned to the stage each time one of the nine auction packages were described, illustrating them in mesmerizing sequences of shapes and movements. After more than a few bidding wars, the final item was put on the block: a once-in-a-lifetime journey through Mexico City with DMA Eugene McDermott Director Agustín Arteaga.

Servers poured tequila shots at each table to set the mood as Gordy described the trip’s itinerary, which included dining in Frida Kahlo’s private garden at Casa Azul. (We volunteer to come along if the group needs someone else to join!) The tent doubled as the venue for the after party as the beat picked up thanks to DJ Elusive, a festive note on which to end another Art Ball.
