Where were the bachelors? Tootsies, overrun with eye-popping, gorgeous young women, would have been a better meeting ground Wednesday night than Zoosk or Match.com. combined. But these were not young women on the prowl. To the contrary. These young professionals gathered at the annual end of summer soirèe for an evening of helping women in need of a hand up.

And, baby, they did it in style. Daniella Rodriguez, one of four chairs of the Women of Wardrobe Summer Soirèe benefitting Dress for Success Houston, stepped out in Hunter Bell, the designer of the hour who was in the store in support of the cause and showcasing her fall collection. The fiancée of the Astros shortstop Carlos Correa was palling around with Kara McCullers, wife of pitcher Lance McCullers Jr., who although pregnant with a girl due in January was fetching in a bright floral dress.

At every turn, we found a fashion statement. Dresses were either very, very short or very long and shorts suits were de rigueur. Valentino rockstud heels and other stilettos vied with bow-tied wedges for shoe appeal. Designer handbags ruled. Keep in mind that this nonprofit provides serious-minded clothes for working women along with various classes and counseling on succeeding in the professional world.

It was an interesting juxtaposition of thought. All with good intentions.

Shelley Taylor Ludwick, who just stepped into the position of Tootsies store director, giddily welcomed the throng of more than 300 with the greeting, “Happy first event of our season.” Also on the welcome wagon were Tootsies owners Donna and Norman Lewis, this their second Summer Soirèe since taking over ownership of the beloved boutique last year.

Circulating among the well-heeled group were event chairs Amanda Boffone, Julie Longoria Chen and WOW president Courtney Campo and KHOU evening news anchor Mia Gradney, a co-founder of WOW, who reprised her role as emcee of the lively evening.

While designer Bell and jewelry designer Mignonne Gavigan garnered much of the attention, it was petite DJ Maddy Rose, who just turned 12, that turned all heads. Under tutelage of DJ Senega, this child rocked the night, seriously focused on her spinning discs.

Her tunes set the pace as adult beverages flowed and as the fashionable femmes grazed through a field of food offerings from such providers as International Smoke, Armandos, Susie Cakes, and EggHaus Gourmet.
