What: The Center for Pursuit “Building a Game Plan for the Future” luncheon

Where: The Briar Club

PC Moment: Emcee Khambrel Marshall, who knows way more than a thing or two about sports, opened the book on Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson in a one on one interview that saw the SRO crowd giving the polite NFL player a standing ovation.

Did Watson ever want to play in Texas, Marshall asked. No. But after he was drafted by the Texans, Watson said that he found people in Houston so welcoming that it reminded him of his home in Georgia. Except for . . . Watson looked Mayor Sylvester Turner in the eye as he said the one thing that he really doesn’t like — the traffic. The 450 guests rewarded that comment with huge laughs.

Watson praised his mother as a hard-working single parent, and talked about the challenge of his mother’s batter with cancer, which occurred when he was in high school.

The discussion included the football camps that Watson conducts for youngsters at Clemson, his alma mater, and in Houston; his faith; and his thankfulness for his success. In short, Watson proved to be a humble but confident rising gridiron star much to the delight of the approving crowd.

With Jennifer Dominiquini, Brittany Sakowitz Kushner and Kevin Kushner as chairs, the luncheon raised a record $360,000 for the center, founded in 1950, which helps empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Some $80,000 of that was raised in only five minutes in the raise sponsored by BBVA. During the successful appeal, the rally towels waived across the ballroom like flags in a storm.
