George W. Bush to Get Moral Courage Award in Star-Studded Houston Night

BY // 05.24.18

During the Holocaust, Lyndon B. Johnson used his power as a congressmen and stretched the limits of his influence stateside to provide sanctuary and protection for European Jews. His courage is admired, and in 1994, the Houston Holocaust Museum created the Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award to honor those individuals who demonstrated a similar level of humanitarian courage and nobility.

The 2018 honoree is former President George W. Bush. His response to the 9/11 attacks, along with his humanitarian initiatives, including fights against AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, make him worthy of this prestigious honor. His “moral courage” will be celebrated at the 2018 HMH Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award Dinner.

Chaired by Shelly and Brian Hendry, Sue and Lester Smith, and Limor and Stuart Smith, the black-tie dinner, at the Hilton Americas Hotel, is one of Houston’s most storied and prestigious charity events, a night of solemn fortitude and reflection. The honorary chairs of this event are the Bush family, Senator Joe Lieberman, Mayor Sylvester Turner and Margaret Alkek Williams. The cocktail-attire dinner will feature conversations with the honoree, George W. Bush. The event will also include a VIP reception.
