Jose Altuve Gets a Surprise From Justin Verlander as Glamorous Astros Wives Steal the Show

Altuve and McCullers' Big Night Brings the Beautiful People Out to Tootsies

BY // 06.14.19

The morning after Jose Altuve and Lance McCullers‘ annual “Team Up for Kids and K9s,” we’re suffering whiplash from checking out the scores of shiny people that swanned into Tootsies for the summer bash. MLB Hall of Famers and MVPs mixed it up with the likes of Kate Upton, social heavyweights including Lynn Wyatt, mayoral candidate Tony Buzbee, Mr. H-E-B Scott McClelland, and enough Cute Young Things to create a see-and-be-seen traffic jam at designer handbags.

Those who hold that Houston cognoscenti board their chartered jets for cooler climes at the stroke of the summer solstice might rethink that position. Of course, with the Astros (their gorgeous wives at hand) playing on home field and turning out in support of Altuve and McCullers, Tootsies felt like the center of the city’s social universe.

The Astros team lining up on this glam playing field — Carlos Correa and fiancé Daniella Rodriguez, George  Springer, Amy and Gerrit Cole, Justin Verlander, Michelle and Tony Kemp, Ashley and Collin McHugh, Joe Smith, Stephanie and Brad Peacock, Astros GM and president of baseball operations Jeff Luhnow, and president of business operations Reid Ryan.

MLB Hall of Famers Craig Biggio with wife Patty and Jeff Bagwell with wife Rachel added to the allure as Astros new and old were exceptionally personable and friendly posing for oodles of selfies.

Fueling the high-energy crowd was a field of food stations offering black truffle pasta from Potente chef Danny Trace, po-boys from Antone’s, sliders from Benjy’s served by Erica and Benjy Levit, the to-die-for chocolate chip cookies from Tiny Boxwoods, banana pudding from B&B Butchers and Restaurant and more.

The event raised close to $400,000, part of which supports McCullers’ interests in pet adoptions, pet rescue and no-kill shelters. In a nod to the pitcher’s animal interests, BARC paraded 10 pooches, each available for adoption, through the crowd of more than 300. Adding to the bottom line was a $25,000 check from an anonymous donor presented on behalf of Citizens for Animal Protection.

Altuve’s interest is children’s charities. His proceeds from the evening will go to the Sunshine Kids Foundation through the José Altuve Foundation at Athletes and Causes.

The fundraising fun included an auction of custom artworks of Altuve, McCullers, Verlander, Correa and Biggio by renowned artists Michael Vahl. The players were on stage encouraging the bidding and when Altuve was high bidder for the portrait of Verlander, the Astros’ pitcher jumped on stage and gave Altuve a hilarious bear hug.

Master restaurateur Ben Berg of B&B Butchers fame was on hand to present his auction items including a dinner at B&B Butchers with the McCullers and Altuve. The generous Berg received rounds of applause for his support.

PC Seen: Astros wives Kara McCullers and Nina Altuve, Tootsies owners Donna and Norman Lewis, plus Julie and Brooke Brookshire, Linda Schmuck and Todd Zucker, Frances Moody, Twila Carter, Bill King, Tony Bradfield and Kevin Black, Caroline and Kevin Walter, Jordan and Dylan Seff, Amanda Boffone, Bill Baldwin, Don Sanders, DeeDee and Wallis Marsh, Kelli and John Weinzierl, and Monica and Joe Casiano.
