Matthew McConaughey Brings His Seldom Seen Family to Prestigious Texas Awards Night

Texas Medal of Arts Clearly Means Something Special to Iconic Star

BY // 03.06.19

It was a night to remember for many reasons but star trackers quickly focused on honoree  Matthew McConaughey, who, in a rare move, brought along his family to the Texas Medal of Arts Awards evening at the Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin. Posing for rarely seen photo opps was the star, his wife Camila Alves; their three children Levi, Vida and Livingston; and his mother Mary Kathlene McCabe.

On the other hand, the fashion savvy bestowed their attention on honoree Brandon Maxwell, fresh from the Lady Gaga/Academy Awards scoop, on the arm of award-presenter and muse Lynn Wyatt.

That was just one element of the Texas Cultural Trust‘s awards weekend that kicked-off in high gear with a cocktail reception featuring music performances by Texas talents, continued the next day with a medal presentation and brunch in the Governor’s Mansion, and concluded that evening with a red carpet reception preceding the awards show and gala dinner.

Houston played a leading role in the festivities as philanthropist Leslie Blanton joined Austin’s Leslie Ward, president of AT&T Texas, as chairs of the biennial awards. In addition, three Houstonians were honored — Trenton Doyle Hancock for Visual Arts, Tony Award winner Jennifer Holliday for Theatre and acclaimed photographer Mark Seliger, fresh from the Academy Awards where he photographed 90 notables at Vanity Fair’s Oscar Portrait Studio. Another Houstonian and former award recipient, Houston Ballet’s Lauren Anderson was on stage as an award presenter.

More than 1,000 attended the evening that included performances by Holliday, 2019 honoree and Grammy Award winner Boz Scaggs, Grammy award winner Ray Benson, and Van Cliburn International Piano Competition medalist Kenny Broberg.

The two days of activities raised close to $1.8 million in support of increased access to the arts and arts education in Texas.
