A Broadway Mega-Hit’s 50th Anniversary Tour Turns the Hobby Center Into the Kit Kat Club

BY // 03.04.16

Talk about culture shock: The musical Cabaret takes place only a handful of years after events in Downton Abbey’s well-bred series finale. To quote the musical itself: “How the world can change. It can change like that … ” The year is 1931. The place: Berlin. It’s the end of one world and the beginning of another, with the Nazi threat looming large — but inside the Kit Kat Club, our Emcee assures us, everything is beautiful. And decidedly bawdy.

Whether you love the show already or only know its greatest hits (“Cabaret,” “Wilkomen,” “Money Money”), now is definitely time to come to the Cabaret that settles into the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts this month under the auspices of Broadway at the Hobby Center, Sponsored by Bank of America. The 50th anniversary tour, care of the Roundabout Theatre Company, is a recreation of the Tony Award-winning 1998 production, which returned to Broadway in 2014 for 388 more performances.

John Kander and Fred Ebb’s acclaimed score, with book by Christopher Isherwood, is brought to life once more by an Academy Award-winning team: director Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) and co-director/choreographer Rob Marshall (Into the Woods, Chicago and Nine).

The acclaimed cast includes Randy Harrison as the Emcee, Andrea Goss (recently seen in TUTS Underground’s production of Striking 12) as Sally Bowles, Shannon Cochran as Fräulein Schneider, Alison Ewing as Fräulen Kost and Mark Nelson as Herr Schultz.
