An Opulent and Enchanting Islamic Gala

BY Anne Lee Phillips // 02.16.15

The fourth biennial Arts of the Islamic World Gala set an opulent and enchanting scene. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, was transformed into a vibrant, floral wonderland for the eagerly anticipated event, where female patrons embraced the theme by dressing in striking, colorful caftans. More than $720,000 was raised for the collection, and five important pieces were acquired, including a late-16th/early-17th-century Ottoman velvet panel, brocaded with silk, cotton and metal-wrapped thread, and valued at $150,000. Director Gary Tinterow praised the guest of honor, Her Excellency Sheikha Hussah al-Sabah, for her role in the collection. After a four-course meal from City Kitchen, complete with wine pairings, guests overtook the dance floor. Illustrious attendees: Nancy and Rich Kinder, Philip and Lori SarofimMonsour Taghdisi and Henry Richardson, Mey and Wissam Al Monthiry, Jaleh and Bruce Sallee, Sima and Masoud Ladjevardian, Sabiha and Omar Rehmatulla, Jennifer and Matt Esfahani.
