When it comes to second-home destinations, Santa Fe ranks high on the list for Houstonians. It serves as the ideal foil to Houston, what with its mountainous terrain, dry steppe climate, 400-plus year history, and the relaxed attitude of the locals.
The ultimate New Mexico compound with a high-fashion pedigree is now available for sale — for a cool $75 million.
The one and only Tom Ford and husband Richard Buckley have put their breathtakingly beautiful 20,000-plus acre Cerro Pelon Ranch — which sits in the Galisteo Basin just south of Santa Fe — on the market. Just like everything Ford touches, the property and its residences are nothing short of stunning, with a dose of the unexpected.
Ford and Buckley tapped Pritzker Prize-winning starchitect Tadao Ando to personally site and design the stunningly austere main residence, which floats atop a reflecting pool and is adjoined by a world-class equestrian facility compound. Internationally vaunted architect/build firm Marmol Radziner executed the construction and also crafted a separate ranch manager’s compound to blend seamlessly with Ando’s designs. Additionally, the property comes with full architectural plans and scale models for an additional Tadao Ando-designed residential compound, sited to be built on the ranch’s highest point.
The property is so impressive, it even has its own Western movie town, Silverado — the town was built in 1985 as a set for the movie of the same name. Since then, the facades have been transformed into actual useable structures and is frequently leased to film studios (Lonesome Dove, All the Pretty Horses, Thor, and others filmed there).
The ranch also features an air strip complete with hanger, so that you can jet to your second (or third or fourth) home with ease.
And don’t worry, Ford and Buckley aren’t abandoning the area. Rumor has it the couple, who split their time between London, L.A. and Paris, are retaining their additional Santa Fe mountaintop home.
