High-Fashion Disney Clothes: The Jungle Book Makes Its Own Wild Style Statement

BY // 04.04.16

If there’s one brand capable of turning Disney’s The Jungle Book into wearable art, it’s Kenzo. With its whimsical colors and bold tiger insignia, the line’s aesthetic gleams with child-like wonder (not to mention founder Kenzo Takada‘s first Paris storefront was named Jungle Jap  how fitting).

Now, Kenzo designers Carol Lim and Humberto Leon have teamed up with Disney for a limited-edition collection based on (the new) The Jungle Book movie, which hits theaters on Friday, April 15.

While the film has been reinvented, the design duo drew much of their inspiration from the original 1967 animated movie.

“We looked at the archival drawings of The Jungle Book as well as the new imagery and our tiger,” Lim told WWD. “We did a beautiful print mixing all these elements together. We put it on beautiful dresses, jackets, denim, jersey, sweatshirts — a bunch of different things.”

Prominent characters like Mowgli, King Louie and Baloo make cameos on the line’s array of multi-colored shirts, dresses, shorts and skirts. Shere Khan even replaces Kenzo’s signature tiger emblem on the brand’s famed sweatshirts.

This attention to detail is no surprise; after all, Leon says The Jungle Book is one of his favorite films.

“There’s a way that everything comes together that is slightly familiar, but also really fresh and exciting,” Leon said. “There is a slight nod to jungle/safari elements (and even beautiful printed silk shorts directly inspired by Mowgli’s costume).”

“Everything has been executed in a way that feels elevated and modern, which has been the collective goal of Disney and Kenzo from the very beginning of this collaboration.”

The Kenzo x The Jungle Book collection is now available at Bergdorf Goodman and launches on Thursday, April 7, on Kenzo’s website.
