Postcard From St. Tropez, Where We Find Rosé, Dancing, and Charming Alleyways

BY Steffi Burns // 07.22.16

The vibrant, color-filled town of St. Tropez overflows with an intoxicating cornucopia of sensory delight. The first time I visited, I hopped on my friend’s scooter and bounced around to various house parties. I ended the night at famous discotheque Les Caves du Roy, dancing the night away until the glorious sunrise the next morning, when I  enjoyed fresh-out-the-oven croissants from the local bakery. Somewhere between the music and the perfect croissant, I fell in love with the city and have been addicted ever since. The town is simply beautiful; however, the real magic lies in the subtle charms and people of the village.

St. Tropez has a certain je ne sais quoi about it. The iconic bell tower is immediately recognizable and always photographed. The city embodies a unique lifestyle encompassing everything from casual street markets to refined luxury. Located on the port, it has beautiful architecture. Over the years, I have traveled there with my family and friends, and on my own. I’ve experienced the town in the quiet months of May and June, as well as the jam-packed high seasons of July and August, and had the pleasure of returning one September — my favorite time to visit, as the sun-filled days are warm and the nights are cool.

The town is located about 15 minutes by land or sea from Plage de Pampelonne, the white sandy beach stretching three miles along the turquoise sea. There is nothing chicer than arriving to lunch along the beach via the yacht’s tender. Days are spent here, an area glittered with myriad beach clubs and restaurants including Moorea Plage, Club Les Palmiers, Bagatelle Beach, Nikki Beach, and my personal favorite, Le Club 55.

Lunch at Le Club 55 is a necessity. With toes dug in the sand, I can sit there for hours, happily sipping on rosé while nibbling on a cornucopia of crudité followed by the freshest fish, then wild strawberries with tarte tropézienne for dessert.

One of my favorite hotels in the world, Hotel Byblos, is in St. Tropez, and I am always grateful each time I can call it my home for the week. I can never soak up enough time there, whether indulging in the decadent breakfast buffet or an apéritif Rosé upon returning from Club 55. Post-dinner always ends with a nightcap on the Byblos terrace, because during summer months music from a jazz trio fills the air. Byblos is also home to Les Caves du Roy, where DJs spin favorite dance tunes while welcoming the crowd with “welcome back to St. Tropez.” Indeed, it is good to be back.

My favorite restaurants and must-dine spots include La Salama for a Moroccan feast, Le Canastel for delicious pizza, and BanH-Hoi for Thai cuisine. Dine alfresco at Le TIGRR at Hotel Ermitage and Rivea at Hotel Byblos. For nights of revelry, L’Opéra and Villa Romana are always entertaining.

One cannot fully experience life as a true Tropézienne without experiencing a few more favorites. Swim in the salty Mediterranean Sea; park yourself at Senequier in the port any time of day to people-watch; indulge in two scoops of gelato from Barbarac while walking along the port and admiring the yachts; stroll along the hidden streets and passageways to discover the intricacies of the town; have an apéritif at the Bar du Sube; wake up early one morning and visit the local market, where you’ll find everything from cashmere to table linens and the most glorious fresh fruits and flowers; adventure over to the village of Gassin for lunch at Le Micocoulier.

Lastly, a trip to St. Tropez is not complete without visiting two local vineyards, Chateau des Marres and Domaine Tropez. Each tasting room is open to the public and accepts private reservations. The wines at each of the estates perfectly capture the essence of St. Tropez. Et voilá.
