Homegrown Glamour

A new collection of vibrant Lucite home accessories available in Dallas hails from an unexpected design team: 14-year-old Hockaday student Sawyer Banister and her mother, Kim. Objects in the collection, which shares the eighth grader’s first name, feature natural materials the family has collected on holiday while walking on a beach in Jamaica or hunting for semiprecious stones in South Africa.

Sawyer got the idea to create her own Lucite accessories from vintage Lucite she spied in a store in Venice Beach last summer. The resulting Sawyer Collection is hand-poured, cut and polished by a U.S. Lucite manufacturer — one of only a handful in the country with the skills to embed and infuse the acrylic with color; each piece takes three days to produce. Architectural pillars, cubes and triangles might serve as bookends, or, as Sawyer sees them, free-floating sculptural elements.
