The countdown to Houston Restaurant Weeks is officially underway. With just two weeks left until opening day, the annual culinary event — which is the single largest fundraiser in the United States benefiting a food bank in the country — unveils its official restaurant list this weekend.
On Saturday, July 15 — also known as Reservation Day — Houstonians can log onto Houston Restaurant Weeks’ website to access and secure reservations to the growing list of more than 200 restaurants set to participate in this year’s affair.
If you’re not familiar with Houston Restaurant Weeks, the month-long affair showcases special prix-fixe menus with a portion of of the sales from each plate sold benefitting Houston Food Bank, which also partners with the Montgomery County Food Bank and the Galveston County Food Bank.
“Houston Restaurant Weeks is very critical to our mission at Houston Food Bank,” Houston Food Bank president Brian Greene says. “Houston Restaurant Weeks helps the Houston Food Bank provide nutritious food that could be beyond the grocery budget for many low income families: fresh produce and meat.
“Houston Restaurant Weeks money helps us acquire fresh produce and keep our Retail Pickup Program going. Houston Food Bank distributes more produce than any other food bank in the U.S. Last year, we distributed 39 million pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables. We also distributed more than 7 million pounds of fresh frozen meat, much of it harvested from nearly 400 grocery stores throughout southeast Texas.”
Brunch, lunch, and dinner menus for Houston Restaurant Weeks range from $20 to $45 with up to $7 donated from each meal. Last year’s Houston Restaurant Weeks raised a record breaking $2,015,157, and more than $9 million since its inception in 2003 by founder Cleverly Stone, providing nearly 29 million meals for food-insecure Houstonians.
Houston’s food bank is the largest food bank in the country.
“As one who reports on restaurants and chefs in our city, I am so grateful for the outpouring of support by Houston’s restaurant industry, diners, and sponsors for Houston Restaurant Weeks, benefiting the Houston Food Bank,” Stone says.
“Houston Restaurant Weeks has become one of the most anticipated times of the year for local foodies and visitors to our city.”
Houston Restaurant Weeks kicks off Tuesday, August 1 and lasts through Labor Day, Monday, September 4.
