Houston’s Glow Ball Guarantees Outlandish Looks — and a Party Like No Other

Looking Back at the Craziest Outfits

Unravel the red carpet, bring out the cameras, and make an entrance in out-of-this-world looks: The spectacular Fresh Arts Gala is just around the corner. The Glow Ball, chaired by Kristen and John Berger, Lisa and Josh Oren, and Karen and Todd Blue, takes place this Friday, March 29, at Silver Street Studios, from 8 pm till midnight.

Inarguably the Houston arts and social scene’s foremost chance to get whimsical, imaginative and even outlandish with gala threads, each year is themed with an idea open to interpretation as a gateway to endless creativity. Witness 2018’s Crystal Ball, wherein gala-goers came to party in outfits both blingy, lustrous and dazzling, as well as inspired by psychics, fortune-tellers and Magic 8-Balls.

There’s never a wrong way to interpret Fresh Arts’ conceptually liberating themes.

This year, the nonprofit runs with the Glow Ball as the theme as it honors six titans of the Houston art world and all their glitzy glamor, who’ve both glowed as individual talents and helped to “glow up” those they inspire.

The 2019 Glow Ball honorees include the Houston Museum of African American Culture’s CEO John Guess Jr.; Ahshia Berry and Sarah-Jayne Smith, founders of nonprofit sustainable fashion house Magpies & Peacocks; Emily Sloan, the artist, sculptor, curator, and leader of the historic Fifth Ward’s community art space Mystic Lyon; the mind behind The Flat and mentor to the Houston electronic music scene DJ Sun; and PaperCity‘s own arts and features editor Catherine D. Anspon.

Last year, we spoke to the 2018 Fresh Arts Crystal Ball honoree (and Fresh Arts co-founder) Marita Fairbanks and her costume designer, Kasi Kubiak, in an extensive and intriguing behind-the-scenes look at their collaboration. It detailed how Fairbanks and the visionary Kubiak dreamed up their elaborate, bejeweled spectacle of an evening gown, which you’ll see in the slideshow above.

As the kickoff to 2019’s Glow Ball counts down ever nearer, we’ve decided to take a look at some of our favorite recent get-ups, not only to highlight the achievements of the most creative garb worn in the past few years, but to also inspire Glow Ball guests looking for last-minute inspiration.
