Your Hot Weekend Guide

BY // 08.09.19

Houston weekends are packed full of events, but how many of them are truly worthy of your time? PaperCity’s new events calendar offers a curated look at all the best things to do in the area. But everyone can still use a guru — or two.

PaperCityWeekend Gurus Matthew Ramirez and Virginia Reynolds cull our calendar for your weekend must dos in this weekly series.

The Dude Perfect Pound It Noggin Tour

There’s no denying that Dude Perfect members Tyler Toney, Garrett Hilbert, twin brothers Cory and Cody Cotton, and Cody Jones have been making major waves across YouTube (and now Nickelodeon) for years with their insane trick shots, laughable humor and hilarious “Stereotypes.” If you’ve never seen a Dude Perfect video (or have never even heard of the group), check them out. You won’t regret it.

The five-member squad (wholly made up of Texas natives) is currently traveling the country for The Dude Perfect Pound It Noggin Tour – the first live tour the group has ever done. On Friday, August 9, Houston will be hosting the highly entertaining and talented group in the grandeur of the Toyota Center.

Tickets have sold out in nearly all of the cities on the tour, but new seats have been added for the Houston show – so grab them before they’re gone! Tickets start at $25 and go up to $250.

New Orleans Hustlers Brass Band Live

The sound that The New Orleans Hustlers Brass Band creates is so good and so fun, you might think that you’re actually in the heart of NOLA with a steaming cup of coffee in one hand, and a deliciously fried and perfectly sweetened beignet in the other.

The group of guys, who hail from the Big Easy, have been putting out New Orleans-style music since 2005, incorporating a variety of sounds, elements and genres to satisfy any audience.

On Friday, they’ll be bringing their fun and energetic music to the main outdoor stage at Axelrad. So savor the remaining days of summer, grab a cold beer or cocktail from the bar, and head out back for a night of trumpets, trombones and all things brass.

The Gatlin Brothers in Concert

Who can ever forget that legendary song that made Houstonians everywhere a little giddy inside? That song whose first word is our favorite word: “Houston.” That’s right, I’m talking about the beloved song, “Houston” sung by Larry Gatlin and The Gatlin Brothers of Abilene. This song was a childhood favorite of mine, and, upon listening to it again, still stands as such.

The Gatlin Brothers hit it big in 1976 when they released their first chart-topping song “Broken Lady,” and what followed were years (now decades) of continued musical success and unceasing popularity. Their sound is authentically Texan, with harmonies and rhythms so simple and clean, it’s hard not to boot-scoot your way straight to that two-stepping dance floor.

On Friday, The Gatlin Brothers will be in Galveston for a one-night-only show at The Grand 1894 Opera House to perform all of their greatest hits. And you can bet they’ll sound just as good now as they did back in the ’70s. What better excuse to make a weekend trip to the island while we’re still in the heat of summer?

Tickets start at $31.50.

DIY Art Car Paint Night

Saint Arnold Brewing Company is doing something really cool – driving a plain white car across Texas, and at special events welcoming you to adorn said blank canvas with your own artiste talents. Of course, the sip-and-paint event is more of an excuse to drink, hang out with friends and put something silly on the car – the brewery is using temporary paints for this event.

But if you’ve ever thought to yourself you’d like to design your own iconic Houston art car set of wheels, but have neither the funds or the spare set of wheels to get crackin’, this is a perfect opportunity to try your hand at designing one.

It goes down this Saturday, August 10, at Bungalow Heights, from 7 pm till 11 pm. Beer specials will run all night. -Matthew Ramirez

Second Sunday Revival: Lebowski Bash

Houston’s historic Market Square area in downtown has become a go-to hang over the past few years, thanks to a revitalization of some of the surrounding bars and restaurants, a few new high-rises, and of course, Market Square Park hosting locally minded, family-friendly events.

This weekend is no different. This Sunday, August 11, the historic downtown space hosts the Big Lebowski Bash, this year’s observance of the phenomenon of pop-up festivals honoring the Coen brothers’ most quotable movie.

Drink a White Russian, get married by The Dude himself, participate in a trivia and costume contest, and of course, see the movie, which will screen at 8:30 pm. Like all Market Square events, attendance is free. Not a fan of the movie? Well, you know, that’s just like, your opinion, man. -Matthew Ramirez
