White Oak Music Hall’s Raven Tower is Finally Reopening: Houston’s Speakeasy in the Sky Returns From the Dead
BY Jailyn Marcel // 08.22.17White Oak Music Hall's Raven Tower is finally reopening.
When White Oak Music Hall debuted last spring, the multi-level concert venue was accompanied by a bar-centric sister concept — The Raven Tower. The spunky locale, which sports its own small music stage alongside an al fresco patio and bar, is a showstopper in its own right.
The main attraction, an eponymous tower topped by a blue-tinged sky box, was once occupied by a young bachelor in the 1970s. Now, the four-story tall attraction serves as a one-of-a-kind speakeasy in the sky, offering a lounge space and posh watering hole for its once robust collection of drinkers.
While more than a year has passed since the tower’s debut, many Houstonians have never been granted a peek inside of the storied haunt as an unfortunate bout with safety issues and regulations resulted in the tower’s temporary shut down mere months after its opening.
Now just in time for fall, The Raven Tower will finally re-open its doors to the public with a September unveiling. Brace yourself for a 1970s-inspired space renovated by Houston’s own Gin Braverman of gin design group and Houston and New York City-based architect Troy Schaum.
Changes are also in store for Raven Tower’s expansive patio which neighbors the grounds’ intimate concert space — a repurposed aluminum warehouse transformed into an open-air pavilion.
Saul Obregon’s La Macro food truck has also found a new home inside Raven Tower’s patio fence. The transition isn’t too surprising considering Houstonians can frequently find La Macro parked outside of the White Oak complex servicing a bevy of hungry concertgoers.
The move provides a stable location for the truck, which has made a name for itself with signature bites such as trompo tacos, taquiza, and trompi burgers.
“I opened La Macro with one goal in mind: to bring the taste of Monterrrey, Mexico to the streets of Houston,” Obregon says. “La Macro was a plaza in my hometown. It was a place for friends and family to come together to meet and share stories.
“La Macro in Houston has transformed into a similar atmosphere that is designed to be a space where the community can come together, socialize, listen to music, and taste authentic dishes that can only be found in Monterrey.”
You can catch La Macro on the Raven Tower patio every Tuesday through Saturday from 4 pm to midnight. 310 North Street, whiteoakmusichall.com/the-raven-tower.
