What

The Center for the Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art (CASETA) is pleased to present its Annual Symposium & Texas Art Fair in Houston from Friday, June 21 through Sunday, June 23, 2024, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Houston – Greenway Plaza.

A key component of this year’s symposium programming is the recent publication of ‘Making the Unknown Known: Women in Early Texas Art, 1860s-1960s’, published by Texas A&M University Press. In addition to a special celebration with a book signing to kickstart the weekend, other presentations throughout the weekend will offer in-depth looks at some of the publication’s featured artists.

Additional Houston-focused presentations include ‘This is Contemporary Art: The Present Moment in Houston 1948-84’ by Alison de Lima Greene of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and ‘The Art of John Biggers: A Living Legacy’ by Dr. Alvia J. Wardlaw of Texas Southern University.

Special programs during the symposium include private tours of Early Texas Art from the John L. Nau III Collection of Texas Art, the Menil Drawing Institute, and Foltz Fine Art.

The Texas Art Fair, held in conjunction with the symposium, is the largest gathering in the state of galleries and auction houses featuring Early Texas Art. Free to the public, the fair will be open on Saturday, June 22, from 9 AM until 6 PM, and on Sunday, June 23, from 9:30 AM until 1:00 PM.
