Docent-led tour of Hung Hsien: Between Worlds explores the intersection of technical mastery with traditional Chinese ink painting and the expressive energy of western abstraction. Hung Hsien’s pivotal role in modern ink painting, though long overdue, reexamines her enduring legacy.
Born in 1933 in Yangzhou, China, Hung Hsien studied painting with Prince Pu Hsinyu at the Normal University of Taiwan. She married in 1957 and moved to Chicago, where she studied painting at Northwestern University and the Art Institute of Chicago. With work exhibited and collected in several museums, including the Smithsonian, the Museum in Hong Kong, and the Art Institute of Chicago, she now lives in Houston’s Museum District with her husband.
Hung Hsien’s career spans over 70 years, and this exhibit will celebrate her artistry and life as the most important yet underrepresented contributors to the development of modern ink painting. Her legacy proves influential and long-lasting. More than 50 paintings from private collections and personal archives will be exhibited.
