The Laurenzo, Mandola and Carrabba families are celebrating the 100th Birthday and memory of their beloved “Mama Ninfa” benefiting The Ninfa Laurenzo Scholarship Fund on September 19th at The Revaire.
Ninfa Laurenzo was an iconic Houston entrepreneur and businesswoman, who as a young widow with five (5) children, sold tortillas from a small storefront attached to the family’s home off Navigation and became infamous when she introduced the Taco al Carbon to the world.
Affectionately known as “Mama Ninfa”, she dedicated her life to support the advancement of Houston’s youth, and especially the students in Houston’s East End.
The Ninfa Laurenzo Scholarship Fund is a 501(c)3 founded in 2017 based on Mama’s belief that education is the basis for a person’s future success.
The Laurenzo-Mandola-Carrabba families are all connected through marriage of Ninfa’s only daughter, Phyllis Laurenzo Mandola, whose late husband was famed restaurateur, Tony Mandola. The three matriarchs of the clan, Blanca Laurenzo, wife of Roland Laurenzo (El Tiempo, Laurenzo’s), Mary Virginia Mandola, widow of famed restaurateur Vincent Mandola (Nino’s, Vincent’s), and Rose Mandola Carrabba wife of John Carrabba, and mother of Johnny Carrabba (Carrabba’s).
