Behind the Scenes With the World’s Most Famous Supermodels

Never-Before-Seen Footage Reveals True Secrets in Dallas

BY // 07.17.18

“Behind the scenes” and “backstage secrets” seem to be the fashion buzz phrases of the decade. We all want to know what goes on backstage where models, designers and stylists flutter about in sheer madness.

To satisfy this desire, some will binge E!’s new show Model Squad, but why not take this a step further?

On September 15, the Dallas Galleria unveils Age of the Supermodel: The Photographs of Donna DeMari, a collection of haute couture apparel accompanied by unseen and unpublished footage by renowned fashion photographer Donna DeMari. This series is in collaboration with 1814 Magazine and the Texas Fashion Collection at the University of North Texas.

DeMari is the OG girl boss. Not only was she the first woman to shoot for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition in 1995 and 1996, but her iconic images have been featured in big-name publications from Italian Vogue to French Marie Claire. When Liz Tilberis, the legendary British Vogue editor, wanted a different perspective during the Fall/Winter 1991-92 fashion weeks, she knew just who to reach out to.

In an age where reality TV was new and Instagram was still decades in the future, DeMari was one of the first to capture the unguarded moments of what goes on during the exclusive fashion shows. With her Nikon F2 at the ready, DeMari was the only one allowed to pass into this glamorous world, filled with the most beautiful women wearing the most expensive and luxurious designs – think Chanel, Balmain, Lacroix, and Lanvin, to name a handful.

The supermodels featured are household names, such as Linda Evangelista, Carla Bruni and Naomi Campbell. The era of the supermodel is brought into sharp focus.

The exhibition will open with a plethora of lectures and events. Listen to DeMari herself discuss the art of photography and Annette Baker, director of UNT Texas Fashion Collection, talk about the history and art behind couture.

Age of the Supermodel, Galleria Dallas, Level One south end, free admission, September 15 through October 28.
