Fashion’s Rock Star Designer Roars into Dallas with a Blow-Your-Socks-Off Store: Cool Clothes and Vintage Music Await
By Linden Wilson Jobe //
When PaperCity last caught up with menswear designer John Varvatos last year, he was at an event at his store in Houston’s Galleria.
He discussed his record label, which he founded in 2014 (which signed artists include Zac Brown Band and Amos Lee); his love of Iggy Pop and Willie Nelson; his close friendship with Ralph Lauren; his personal style (suede jackets, skinny scarves, distressed ankle boots); and his book, John Varvatos: Rock in Fashion, (Harper Design, 2013).
Now, Varvatos has opened his 28th store — his first in Dallas — at NorthPark Center, stocking the full run of ready-to-wear and accessories from the John Varvatos Collection, John Varvatos Star USA Collection, and Converse by John Varvatos.
The boutique reflects his love of classic rock, with photographs of Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones framed on the walls, which can be purchased on Varvatos’ website and in many of his stores.
The design elements of the store riff on SoHo industrial, with glazed-brick, zinc-metal windows, rift and quartered wooden floors, and white-brick and walnut slat walls.
“We have always connected with the Dallas men’s consumer in terms of style, culture, and music,” says Varvatos, who launched his brand in 2000 and has twice been honored as Menswear Designer of the Year by the CFDA.
The Fall/Winter 2017 collection of luxe knits, moto and suede-shirt jackets, and rock-inspired outerwear dubbed Wild at Heart, is in a moody palette of black, pearl gray, charcoal, camel, and dark olive.
Vintage tables and benches hold the rest of the goods — eyewear, leather and canvas footwear, fragrance, scarves, man-jewelry, and other bits and bobs to rock your world.
