Malia Mills swimwear returns to Houston after shuttering its store at 2606 Westheimer in 2016, leaving their cult following of customers forlorn. A pop up in River Oaks District, resembling the beach vibe of the Los Angeles boutique, is open now through July, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the women-centric design house.
Malia Mills, the designer, set out in 1993 to redefine what a swimsuit could be, and how it could make you feel — stand-alone bra-sized separates engineered with the precise fit of lingerie in patterns and colors you would find in your closet. Mills pioneered what was a completely new, inclusive and inspiring voice on the subject of women and beauty… a brand owned and produced by women, for women and about women.
Malia and her sister Carol run the business, with 35 women employees and Frank the cutter. The sisters have expanded the signature swimwear collection to include ready-to-wear and accessories, sold in nine stores across the United States
Born in Honolulu, Malia studied design, draping and pattern making at Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in Paris and graduated from Cornell University.
Yes, all this to design swimwear. The perfect swimwear.
