Rhapsody in Blue

The new Blue Mambo hair salon is a step, break, rock and hold from its old location on Chelsea Street. While the cutting and color expertise of the staff remain, the newly embraced loft feel of the second-floor Chelsea Market corner unit (facing Montrose) necessitated extensive demo of the walls and ceilings to open into a barrier-free, common space for 26 stylists to execute the salon’s European cuts.

Carts are retrofitted into waiting-area seating, while familiar accents — white floor boards from the old location — reappear as wall veneer. Metal stringers support elongated mirrors at each station, creating an industrial and cool vibe that allows clients to witness the syncopated and lively dynamic of the salon from each station. The space’s overall hues are black and white, and as owners Julie Deal, Ronnie and wife Jo Ann Anderson explain, the full color spectrum results from the style of their unique clientele. Organic body hue-ing by Throwing Copper and chakra readings by Urban Muse round out the services of this energetic salon.
