NEW YORK — Rihanna always goes her own way. The pop star recently made headlines for reportedly turning down the chance to perform at the next Super Bowl in Atlanta because she supports former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and doesn’t agree with the NFL’s stance on the national anthem kneeling controversy.

She shook things up at the end of New York Fashion Week, too, with the buzzy debut of her Savage X Fenty fall/winter lingerie collection in a Garden of Eden botanical setting featuring a diverse group of models of different skin tones and body types, including one who was just minutes away from going into labor.

As soon as Slick Woods, the very pregnant 22-year model and face of Fenty Beauty, left the runway in a bondage-inspired lingerie and pasties, she was met by paramedics, who whisked her away to a nearby hospital. She gave birth to a baby boy after 14 hours of labor.

Rihanna turned the Brooklyn Navy Yard into an exotic land of botanical domes, hyrdroponics and natural plants to introduce her collection of barely-there lingerie with a street style vibe. She showcased 50 models and dancers of all shapes and sizes — some in bras up to 40DDD and 3x sleepwear — having the time of their lives. Some, like the Hadid sisters, are famous while others are unknown faces of tomorrow.

More performance art than runway show, the models moved in slow motion or took part in intricate dance moves as they showcased the collection of unmentionables in group tableaus.

“Women being celebrated in all forms and all body types and all races and cultures,” Rihanna explained to the New York Times.

Rihanna’s Bold Lingerie Style

Styles range from bras and panties in neon animal prints or jewel tones to tanks, T-shirts, hot shorts and other loungewear pieces emblazoned with the Savage X logo. Some bras and undies are more revealing in fishnet and barely-there mesh or super sexy bodysuits with sheer triangle cups and an open back.

For those wanting a little more cover-up, oversized satin pajamas can be worn night and day and denim is reworked on printed chiffon and chambray sets featuring traditional jeanswear top stitching with a touch of lace.

For the holiday season, the singer is offering the “Charm Thong and Bikini,” with detachable mix-and-match charms to decorate the frilly underwear.

Many of the looks are now available online at www.SavageX.com. Prices range from $12.50 to $115.

Rihanna has also released a  Savage X limited-edition capsule collection, including a pastel short satin robe and cami and bikini set, with proceeds going to the Clara Lionel Foundation, the non-profit that the singer founded in 2012 (and is named after her grandparents) that benefits education and emergency response programs globally.

Needless to say, there was a lot of buzz about the new collection on social media. It was among Top 10 most socially engaged fashion week shows, according to ListenFirst, a leading social analytics firm.

This is the brand’s second season since launching in May, and first ever appearance during fashion week.
