Revolutionary Shades Have Texas Homeowners Seeing Windows in a Whole New Light: How J Geiger Saw a Brighter Future in Making Things Look Right

BY Promoted Series Correspondent // 08.16.18

Having worked as a high-end media system designer, James Geiger has seen some of the nation’s most spectacular homes. Circa 2011, AV equipment had evolved to the point of hiding in plain sight, integrating seamlessly with elegant interiors. With sleeker and sleeker electronics, outdated technology began sticking out like a sore thumb.

Geiger found window shades to be the worst offender because of their bulky fasteners and screws. Fascia and valances were widely accepted (albeit not very good) solutions, and then Geiger had an epiphany.

Why not get rid of the ugly parts?

That question led Geiger to create an automated shading system with no visible wires or screws. Instead of L-shaped brackets, which have traditionally hidden behind fascia, under a valance, or within a ceiling pocket, Geiger designed round brackets that match the profile of a rolling shade.

“It was in front of my face the whole time. The shade is round, and it rolls in a circle… so the brackets should also be round,” Geiger says. “The bottom line is that a lot of blatantly obvious things don’t become blatantly obvious until someone points them out. We don’t want our shades to have ugly parts, so we don’t make ugly parts.

“By designing shades that look good from every angle, there’s nothing to cover up.”

J Geiger shading systems have been widely praised by architects, builders, interior designers, and homeowners nationwide. The shades are manufactured in Charleston, SC, and can be found in some of the most exclusive homes and businesses in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Francisco, Seattle, Miami, Aspen, and New York.

Manufactured in Charleston, SC, J Geiger Shading Systems have been widely praised by architects, builders, interior designers, and homeowners in select markets nationwide since 2011. J Geiger shades can be found in some of the most exclusive homes and businesses in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Francisco, Seattle, Miami, Aspen and New York.

Architect Jake Watkins, senior associate at Roger Ferris + Partners, is one of many fans.

“There are lots of things one can do wrong in designing a shade,” Watkins says. “J Geiger does everything right… simple, elegant, and precise. They complement any thoughtfully designed space.”

J Geiger Shading expanded its reach to Texas, with some impressive installations in Austin, Dallas, and Fort Worth. Success in the Lone Star State prompted the company to open a Houston office this June. Now, for the first time, J Geiger has a full-time, dedicated team in Texas.

Transforming Windows & Views with a Unique Vision

Geiger’s vision is sleek. His shading system designs are intentionally streamlined to optimize views and eliminate intrusive valances. His patented hardware allows shades to be mounted close to the glass so that they take up very little interior space. J Geiger hardware can also be mixed and matched in such a way that shades can be mounted one after another, in continuous series to cover large floor-to-ceiling windows.

J Geiger Shading offers two fascia-free shading systems. The R Series features patented hardware milled from solid aluminum. R Series brackets can be mounted inside window jambs for a low-profile look or above windows as part of a curtain wall.

This spectacular New York home uses the R Series Shading System.

The D Series Shading System offers the same sleek profile and similar flexibility at a lower price point. It features patented hardware milled from industrial strength Delrin.

Before any project begins, clients receive a complimentary design consultation. A Geiger representative will present options for hardware configuration, fabric and automation. There are more than 400 fabrics to choose from, and J Geiger shades are compatible with all home control systems on the market. The shades are manufactured to unique client specifications, and the system is installed by trained technicians.

Attractive mechanics and precise measurements ensure that J Geiger shading systems integrate seamlessly with interior aesthetics and complement architectural details. When shades blend in, artwork, furnishings, fixtures and views really shine. Geiger feels that other shading systems dominate a room’s design by competing with it.

After seven years of shade design, client feedback is still the most gratifying part of the job.

“When I present our product to people, I show them pictures of our shades and traditional shades,” says Geiger. “They look at the pictures of our shades and say, ‘That’s what shades are supposed to look like. They look right.’ And that’s exactly what we want to hear.”

J Geiger shades look right. No ugly wires or screws allowed. No valences or boxes needed.
