Austin’s Most Underrated Coffee Shops — 5 Caffeine Palaces You Need to Know

BY // 03.08.18

When it comes to Austin coffee shops, I tend to rotate around a few places based on what I need — whether it’s a great spot for getting work done, catching up with friends, or just reading a book. And while Mozart’s gets most of the love in the land of weird, these five under the radar Austin coffee shops are great places to try.

They’ll also all definitely have easier parking than Mozart’s hellish lot.

Civil Goat Coffee Co.

Located at 704 Cuernavaca, this neighborhood spot is a bit off the beaten path, but you’ll be glad you stopped in. Before you ask, yes, a live goat named Buffers is the star of the show, at least when owner Chris O’Brien is there.

Thankfully, Civil Goat also pays careful attention to its coffee at every step, from the sustainable farms they seek out, to roasting up beans at the very last minute so they stay fresh. The cafe offers up espresso drinks, nitro coffee, and hot tea and chocolate in a minimalist and clean space.

Stonehouse Coffee & Bar

Stonehouse is located in a renovated landmark building at 1105 S. Lama. It boasts an inviting interior and large porch to sip coffee on when temperatures fall below 90 degrees in Austin. Stonehouse serves espresso drinks, a wide range of teas, matcha lattes — and have non-dairy options.

Afterwards, check out Stonehouse’s craft beer. You can take the brew home in growlers, or stay through happy hour for a glass of wine and a scoop of gelato from Austin Gelato Company.

Vintage Heart

Vintage Heart is the epitome of a cozy neighborhood coffee shop at 1405 E. 7th, perfect for catching up with friends or settling in with a cup of tea to read a book. In addition to the standard espresso drinks (the Vanilla Latte is heavenly) and brewed coffee, Vintage Heart also offers unique teas from Zhi Tea, like Ginger Lime Rooibos, Plumberry Black, and more.

Fleet Coffee

You’ll never convince me there’s a better coffee drink than Fleet’s The Ritual — a mix of steamed ginger snap infused milk and espresso, served with, you guessed it, a ginger snap cookie. Not too sweet, the drink is only one of Fleet’s expertly crafted espresso drinks, which accompany the store’s espresso drinks, Kalita and Chemex pourovers, and tea options. Fleet is located at 2427 Webberville.

Kinda Tropical

OK, so Kinda Tropical isn’t exactly a well-kept secret, but the small space at 3501 E. 7th and chill vibe makes it a great contender for those looking to expand their coffee options beyond Starbucks. As impressive as Kinda Tropical’s retro island decor is, its coffee and tea menu, which is small but done with precision, is even better.

In addition to coffee, tea, and espresso drinks, the Vietnamese coffee and thai tea keep us coming back. That, and the fact Kinda Tropical’s mural is great for Instagram.
