What: Houston Astro Collin McHugh‘s Urban Harvest benefit
Where: Revival Market
PC Moment: With the playoffs in the headlights, a passel of Houston Astros joined the team’s relief pitcher and his wife, Ashley, in support of Urban Harvest‘s Youth Education and Community Garden programs. The couple has made a commitment to help provide good nutrition across the city by supporting organization programs that promote community gardens and that contribute to growing sustainable foods.
Excitement was palpable in advance of Friday’s playoff opener against the Tampa Bay Rays as “good luck” resonated through The Heights’ craft butcher shop and cafe. Once again, the team showed genuine support for the charitable interests of their brothers on the diamond.
The Astros turnout was a boost for the nonprofit that works to raise awareness and funds to continue to “Grow Good” for the city. Janna Roberson, executive director of Urban Harvest said, “Events like tonight allow us to bring awareness about the importance of access to fresh, local food in our city, whether that be in community gardens, school programs, farmers markets, or outreach classes.”
One of the most notable programs are Urban Harvest’s weekly Farmers Markets, which are held on Saturdays 8 am to noon at 2752 Buffalo Speedway (St. John’s School parking lot) and the City Hall local lunch market each Wednesday 11 am to 1:30 pm.
With 80 or so guests in the mix, the night pulled off a satisfactory $35,000 for Urban Harvest, in part thanks to the silent auction, which, of course, featured numerous Astros memorabilia.
