Love, love, love the Farm Girls Supper Club concept — a casual al fresco repast held in a verdant urban pocket for no greater reasons than to enchant Houstonians and to shine a light the city’s green spaces. So it was that close to 100 diners in breezy summer frocks and comfy guayaberas settled into Evelyn’s Park in Bellaire for the supper club’s third event.

While the organizers focused on producing a romantic dinner evening that saluted California’s legendary Chez Panisse and chef Alice Waters, the colorful tableau of summer fashions was remarkable, as if Ralph Lauren, Cynthia Rowley and Johnny Was had choreographed an informal summer pageant.

Farm Girls Supper Club founders Courtney Paddock and Marcia Smart have been joined in their effort by KB Table‘s chef Kelli Bunch, former personal chef to the late President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush, forming a mighty trio that created a very special sunset party in the heart of the city.

The Danielle Reich Duo serenaded with French jazz sounds as servers, dressed in monogramed linen aprons, passed small bites including pickled deviled quail eggs from Texas Quail Farms and grilled Texas peach crostini with honey-infused chevre and while bow tie-wearing bartenders mixed specialty cocktails such as The Betsy, (a riff on a Cucumber Collins) named after Betsy’s, the Evelyn’s Park restaurant under the Adair Concepts umbrella.

The main act took place on the park’s event lawn where two rows of picnic tables set the stage for the inspired dinner. Tabletop props included heaping piles of summer herbs and produce. Think lavender, artichokes, tomatoes and beets. Place settings of mismatched china and vintage plates, pressed glass stemware and red and white cafe napkins added to the vibrant canvas.

Supper was served family style and featured citrus snapper en papillote, coffee-rubbed flat iron steak, Brazos Valley cheeses, coconut crispy rice, Sustainable Harvesters‘ vegetable tian, mixed green salads and bread baskets accompanied by tomato confit and olive oil dipping sauce. The meal washed down with a Napa cab from Stout Family Wines, founded by Houstonians. And for dessert, few could resist the Brown Butter Fredericksburg peach cobbler with warm caramel sauce accompanied by homemade cardamon honey ice cream and honey.
