River Oaks Tennis Tournament Brings Out Houston’s Most Glamorous Ladies for a Poolside Party to Remember

Social Butterflies and Mother Nature's Butterflies Flock Together

BY // 04.11.19

It seems to be the season of butterflies and florals with mother nature, the ladies who lunch, and Tootsies all contributing to a tableau at River Oaks Country Club that even Shakespeare would have applauded, “When proud-pied April, dressed in all his trim, hath put a spirit of youth in everything.”

The buoyant, youthful beauty of the Men’s Clay Court Championship luncheon, inspired by chairwoman Terri Haven‘s “Le Jardin” theme, resonated from the dreamy flower embellished fashions from Tootsies to the veritable garden of florals worn by the SRO bevy of femmes. At the end of the show, the lead models opened boxes they carried to release a covey of butterflies that fluttered across the luncheon tables, each adorned with stretches of spring flowers and the occasional silken butterfly.

For two days each year, Tootsies takes over the ROCC swimming pool terrace for the midday affair that is laced with cool libations, read that wine and iced bottles of champagne on each table, as well as iced tea, of course. The Tenenbaum sponsor table upped the glam component of the day by trading out the Veuve Cliquot for Cristal, a fitting upgrade as their special guest was Lucrezia Buccellati, the family brand’s co-creative designer, visiting from Italy.

Tenenbaum and Tootsies for the second year partnered with a pop-up shop, just shy of the main tennis court, where jewels and stylish fashions were there for the taking. On day one of the luncheon, the pop-up appeared to be doing very well. Keeping a close eye on the commerce were gracious hosts Donna and Norman Lewis, Tootsies owners, and the charming Tony Bradfield of Tenenbaum.

Tootsies’ creative director Fady Armanious orchestrated the divine presentation of mostly floaty creations, 80 in all, from the must-have labels of  Oscar de la Renta, Versace, Alex Perry, Marchesa, Carolina Herrera, PatBo, and more.

As is tradition, a dozen or so very dapper gents mingle through the ladies and move upstairs to the balcony for viewing the fashion parade before ducking inside for a more testosterone-friendly lunch in the Men’s Grill. Among them were John Havens, Greg Curren, Keith Mosing, Steve Mach, Joe Cleary, Bob Hogan and Bill Baldwin.
