A Dallas Museum Gets Creative and Offers Presents With Pop
By Rebecca Sherman //
The Dallas Museum of Art’s new director of retail, Alison Silliman, has gathered some exciting fare to coincide with the museum’s two concurrent exhibitions, ”International Pop” (closes on January 17, 2016) and “Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots” (closes on March 20, 2016). Her hand-picked items go beyond the typical T-shirt and poster memorabilia associated with museum-store exhibition goods.
Many of the pieces were commissioned by Silliman for the exhibit, and she reached out to her growing cadre of hip artisans for contributions, including Austin-based Finell, known for using innovative materials such as rubber for tabletop and home decor.
Sold through the DMA’s brick-and-mortar shop, the clever Pop and Pollock souvenirs also include exclusive, limited-edition pieces, such as Nancy Gonzalez’s colorful Splatter handbag, Eddie Borgo’s Lichtenstein-inspired bracelet, a chic Pop clutch made by Edie Parker and Deborah Lippmann nail-polish sets inspired by Pop and Pollock. For home, there’s also striking handpainted placemats and large handmade plates depicting Pollock’s paintings, inventive rubber squiggle coasters and placemats and splatter glassware.
Pop’s irreverent and spirited themes — made famous by Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein and Gerhard Richter — show up in the form of a snow globe featuring Warhol’s iconic Brillo box; Scandinavian artist Erró’s crazy 1962 Foodscape painting chopped into a smorgasbord of puzzle pieces; and Lichtenstein’s Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck cartoon painting rendered on a coffee mug.
