Dallas Art Museum Gets Into Dinner Plates: These Limited Editions Are Anything But Mundane
BY Natalie Gempel //A limited edition set of plates by artist Pierre Krause will be available for purchase at the Nasher Store.
This spring, the Nasher Sculpture Center is introducing The Circle Project, an initiative to highlight talented individuals within the Nasher Sculpture Center’s Artist Circle through a design partnership with Cerámica Suro, a ceramics studio based in Guadalajara, Mexico. Each year, the Nasher will commission an artist from the circle to design a set of limited edition dinner plates, which will be produced by Cerámica Suro and sold in the Nasher Store during the Dallas Art Fair in April.
Proceeds from the sale of the plates will go back into the Nasher’s exhibition and education programs, including the Artist Circle.
For its inaugural year, the Circle Project will feature the provocative work of self-described “post-lol multimedia thing-maker, exile writer, couch curator, SoundCloud rapper, DJ and full-time freak,” Pierre Krause. Krause’s work ranges from sculpture to paintings to text-based interventions and music. Often emotionally charged and introspective, the work addresses friendship, romance, politics and more. The artist’s work has been exhibited in Dallas, New York, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Los Angeles, Mexico and Japan.
For the Circle Project, Pierre used the idea of a meal as a jumping off point, creating a series of witty and suggestive text-based images to adorn the plates. The phrases and statements like “I want to swallow you like mad” intend to underscore ideas of desire, appetite and consumption.
Cerámica Suro is known for its frequent collaborations with artists and has produced a stark, minimalist set of plates to reflect Krause’s distinct style.
A limited edition of the set of four plates, with an accompanying artist-signed certificate will be available for $1,500 in the Nasher Store beginning April 14, 2018. Call 214-242-5110 to pre-order a set.
The Nasher Sculpture Center will celebrate its new endeavor with a launch party for The Circle Project on Saturday, April 14 from 3 to 6 pm at the Nasher Store, with Pierre Krause in attendance.
