Are you a good speller? Are you a good speller while drinking? Wheelhouse, a gastropub at 1617 Hi Line Drive, is giving you the chance to find out starting tonight. This evening will be the first night of a five-week, adults-only spelling bee that takes place on Fridays from 9 pm to 1 1pm.
The winning wordsmith each night will receive a $100 gift card toward their bar tab that night. The top three finishers each week will advance to the championship finals on May 31 for a chance to win a private beer dinner for six at Wheelhouse.
The event will be hosted by Isaac Young, a local actor, and mistress of ceremonies will be Michelle Padgett, editor of The Joule’s online and print publication 1530 Main. To add to the fun, audience members can also participate by completing a social media stunt to earn their favorite speller a chance to phone a friend, ask the audience, or cut the word.
Spellers can ask for definitions of course, as well as languages of origin, parts of speech, alternate pronunciations and a sentence using the word. This is for real.
Grab a bite and drink at Wheelhouse while you watch. The gastropub has small plates, such as spinach & artichoke dip, nachos and hot wings. Cocktails include a PB Old Fashioned with peanut butter washed bourbon and angostura and the Salty Dog with vodka, grapefruit and honey. Of course, there’s also beer and wine.
The max number of competitors each night is 20, with at least five spots available for walk-ins. To reserve a spot, email firstname.lastname@example.org with your name and preferred date of May 3, 10, 17, or 24.
