Bill Murray is Coming Back to Houston, But This is No Rushmore Sequel

Get ready for The Life Symphonic. Bill Murray is coming to Houston for a one-night-only performance at Jones Hall this spring. He takes the stage on April 16 for an evening of literature and music, reading and singing that channels the likes of Ernest Hemingway and Leonard Bernstein.

It’s been awhile since his Rushmore days, and we’re betting Houstonians can’t wait to see Murray back here. It may not be the St. John’s School Campus, but Jones Hall isn’t too shabby.

Murray will bring his New Worlds: Bill Murray, Jan Vogler & Friends Tour to the Houston Symphony’s stomping grounds at 7:30 pm on April 16. Forget any visions of Groundhog Day. When we say one night only, we mean it.

You’ve seen Murray as an actor. A comedian. A Ghostbuster. Even as a singer, technically, as Nick the Lounge Singer on Saturday Night Live. But you’ve never seen him like this. In New Worlds, a nationwide tour, Murray and a classical trio play homage to great American music and literature.

The track list ranges from a West Side Story medley to “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair” by Stephen Foster.

The rare live performance will highlight influential voices in American arts — think Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Ernest Hemingway, and Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Foster, and George Gershwin for good measure.

The album and tour’s name plays into the group’s range of global backgrounds. Murray, an Illinois native, will be accompanied by German cellist Jan Vogler, Chinese violin virtuoso Mira Wang and Venezuelan pianist Vanessa Perez. But with this diverse group, we’re sure nothing gets Lost in Translation.

While at Jones Hall, the performance does not include the first-time Grammy-winning Houston Symphony.
