Dallas’ Best Fall Activities — Things to Do to Get Into Texas’ Great Weather Season: Autumn’s Much More Than Just Pumpkin Spice

BY // 10.11.18

Now that fall has sprung in Dallas, and temperatures are in the chilly low seventies and high sixties — Brr!—  it’s obviously time to get right into a fall state of mind. I’m talking big sweaters and pumpkin spice everything.

Fun fact: I’m that person that owns pumpkin soap. You do not have to go to that extreme to enjoy the season — and cooler weather. Just partake in one of these top Dallas fall activities instead.

Hike at Oak Cliff Nature Preserve

Oak Cliff Nature Preserve Trail is a 6.5-mile somewhat trafficked loop trail located near Dallas that features beautiful wildflowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail, but must be kept on leash.

Enjoy Anything and Everything Pumpkin

Sure, you could just step foot inside a Trader Joe’s this time of year, and fill your pantry with everything pumpkin, but several Dallas restaurants and cafes have a lot to offer in terms of warming pumpkin spice. Try the pumpkin margarita at Blue Mesa Grill, the Pumpkin Punkel brew at Lakewood Brewing Co. and the pumpkin macarons from Bisous Bisous.

Cafe Brazil also boasts a few serious pumpkin offerings like pumpkin pancakes — classic buttermilk pancakes loaded with cinnamon and pumpkin and then topped with cinnamon butter and dusted with powdered sugar — and pumpkin cheesecake with a brownie walnut crust.

Visit Dallas Arboretum’s Autumn at the Arboretum

Running through November 21, the Arboretum fall festival is a spectacular show of color with 4,500 of fall’s favorite flowers. You’ll find Chrysanthemums along with 150,000 more stunning, fall blooming plants and the internationally acclaimed Pumpkin Village, featuring more than 90,000 pumpkins, squash and gourds. This year’s theme is the beloved book, Peter Pan.

Run the Pumpkin Spice 5K, 10K, 15K

Get ready to sip on locally roasted coffee from Avoca Coffee and hot chocolate after this November 17th race. For those runners over 21, reward your run with a Rahr Pumpkin Ale, Raising Cane’s lemonade and sweet tea, and Dannon yogurt. And you can take part in —or at least stare agape at— the 2nd annual pumpkin pie eating contest and enjoy live music and a cozy, indoor after party with gorgeous views of Cowtown from the Trinity Trail.

The race starts at the Panther Island Pavilion in Fort Worth with the option for a 5K, 10K, or 15K course.

“It’s an experience,” says Bree Redwine, community relations coordinator for Run Project. “That’s one thing that I think a lot of these kind of races don’t have. You go run and think ‘Meh’ afterwards, and we definitely put a lot of effort into every aspect.”

Swag includes a zip tech shirt, a finisher medal to lord over all your friends, and a coffee tumbler to sip a pumpkin spice latte from, of course. A portion of the proceeds from the race goes to Leukemia Texas.

“Each of our races has a beneficiary, and we’re very passionate about that and very into giving local,” Redwine notes. “So each of our races has a different beneficiary, which is wonderful.”
