Halloween Weekend in Houston — The Parties, Events and Concerts You Need to Hit: The Weekend Guru’s Fearless Guide

BY // 10.27.17

Houston weekends are packed full of events, but how many of them are truly worthy of your time? PaperCity’s Weekend Guru Matthew Ramirez cuts through the clutter to give you the best options in this weekly series.

Make Love Stay
Get your Halloween weekend started with some local art: The Visual and Dramatic Arts Department at Rice, Rice Strategic Initiatives, and CENHS present “Could Be Loved,” an opening featuring Houston-based Lindsea Varisco and Huida Xiang, a Rice University student. Taking place at an experimental cube dubbed The JuiceBOX, the unique locale is a refashioned storage unit transformed into an artful transitory conduit for accessibility and sustainability.

“Could Be Loved” sits at the corner of Alumni Drive and College Way in front of South Servery at Rice University. The exhibition opens at 7 pm Friday and is free to the public. 8th Wonder has donated free beer for those who are over 21. Sounds from DJ Big Heavy Kenny and DJ Yazza Spazza will be heard. The Houston Astros’ World Series game will be projected, too.

Werewolf Bar Mitzvah
Another Halloween means another Halloweening 666, where members of local bands dress up and perform as legendary acts at Walters for an all-night costume party. Giant Kitty and Miears will be Devo; Rose Ette will perform as The Velvet Underground; and members of Ruiners, Lace, Clean Teens, and Sparse will perform as Minor Threat (among others — most tantalizingly, a performance dubbed Patsy Cline Inch Nails).

Tickets are $10 and 100 percent of the proceeds go toward The Montrose Center’s Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Wear a costume! Doors open at 7 pm Friday.

I’m Goin’ to Graceland
Southern fave State of Grace has been a chic, popular restaurant stop for foodies and celebs alike for two years – with Houston Texans star Deandre Hopkins, and Astros playoff hero Justin Verlander with his wife-to-be Kate Upton recent visitors – with its eclectic mixture of Gulf Coast seafood, Tex-Mex, and Vietnamese-inspired dishes (they also employ the loveliest line cook). To celebrate its second anniversary, executive chef Bobby Matos and his team is throwing a culinary party to remember.

Featuring an oyster shucking competition and carefully curated bites from a murderer’s row of chefs, including toques from Pass & Provisions, Killen’s, Weights + Measures, Fluff Bake Bar, Brennan’s and many more, a mere $35 gets you a ticket to the flavorful romp. Sunday, from 4 pm to 7 pm at State of Grace; ticket sales benefit the Houston Food Bank’s Harvey relief efforts.

Never Catch Me
Electronic composer, producer, rapper, filmmaker, and DJ Flying Lotus has been around the world spreading his space-age sounds and aesthetic to a mass audience eager to enjoy the L.A. artist’s stoner-friendly, futuristic vibes. Fresh off his disgusting (trust me, he would appreciate that description) film Kuso, he heads to Houston Monday, October 30, for a Flying Lotus in 3D tour stop. A one-of-a-kind audio-video experience, the show does come complete with 3D glasses for your viewing pleasure.

He debuted this stage setup at FYF Fest in Los Angeles to rave reviews, but save yourself from spoilers and go in cold (but maybe not sober). Monday at House of Blues; doors open at 8 pm; tickets start at $27.50.

The Butterfly Effect
Halloween brings Lil Wayne and Travis Scott to Houston at Warehouse Live. What more needs to be said? Regardless of what happens in the World Series, Travis Scott, who’s been prepping his long-delayed new record, Astroworld, will definitely bring the party to his hometown on Halloween night with his team on the world’s biggest stage. Hopefully all his Twitter trolling of The Kid Mero, one half of the late-night duo Desus & Mero, will finally get him on the Viceland hit show.

Wayne, who seemingly plays in Houston a half-dozen times a year, will also bring tons of energy to what will surely be a rambunctious evening. (It’s dubbed “All Treats, No Tricks.”) Halloween night (that’s Tuesday) at Warehouse Live, with doors at opening 8 pm and tickets starting at $65.

This Father’s Day, he’s not dreaming of ties or tools—He wants the Recteq DualFire 1200 from Bering’s.
