True Blue Waters Await in a Secret Spot About an Hour From Houston — Hunting an Oasis

Everything You Need to Know About Huntsville's Blue Lagoon and Scuba Paradise

BY // 05.28.19

You’ve heard of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. But what about the Divers in the Blue Lagoon?

If you’re already shaking off spring and craving summertime, Huntsville offers a surprising, often overlooked oasis. With real blue water. (Banish those images you have of Galveston’s often murky offerings.)

This largely unknown spot combines all the fun of sunny days, plus an exciting challenge — learning or honing an impressive skill. School’s out for summer, but learning doesn’t have to be.

As surprising as it may sound, the Walker County city is home to a hidden gem: The Blue Lagoon. This is a pristine, crystal-clear diver’s paradise, just a little more than an hour’s drive from Houston.

It is also a perfect spot for a leisurely dip, float or hangout on the shore. Did we mention the blue waters?

Just 70 miles north of Houston on I-45, adventure awaits in spring-fed waters. The former rock quarry offers up the opportunity for you to become a certified diver, or jump in for a dive if you already are one.

Non-diving swimmers are allowed to bask in the stunning waters, too. But it’s more of a scuba site than a swimming role. Non-divers’ hours are limited to give priority to divers and those learning to dive. Camping areas and picnic spots are scattered around The Blue Lagoon to make the most of a chill, relaxing day. Just a heads up — no pets are allowed.

Texan Scuba holds scuba lessons all week long in Phil and Sharla Riggs’ 30-foot-deep pool. The business also teaches diving in Cozumel.

Diving students must be at least 18 years old or accompanied by a parent or their instructor. Diver rates come in at $20 per person. For those just looking for a swim, the cost is $22 for ages 10 and up.

But the excitement doesn’t end there. You can say namaste on the shore. Stay At Home Yoga is offering one-of-a-kind classes against the stunning backdrop of The Blue Lagoon.

You can increase your strength and improve your flexibility for $40 with a one-hour yoga session, plus an hour of swimming, floating or snorkeling.

Or you can take it to the next level with SUP Yoga  — an hourlong SUP yoga session on the water followed by an hour of paddle boarding for just $60.

We just have one question — water you waiting for?
