I must preface this with an all-too-necessary caveat: This was a rouse. My partner TJ (or Taraji as we call him) and Lucy Wrubel, my personal spirit animal and baton twirler, devised a perfect plan to surprise Wrubel’s daughter, Stella, with tickets to Kacey Musgraves’ hometown stop in Dallas for her “Oh What a World Tour.”

I think it’s safe to say, we crushed it.

Musgraves’ third EP, Golden Hour was awarded album of the year not one month ago at the Grammys — and as a devoted member of the KC Street Team, I could feel it in my custom Miron Crosby boots that this was going to be a night for the record books.

Clad in a citron-green, long-sleeved ALC Paris mini dress — and the most perfect of Kate Spade encrusted go-go boots — Musgraves gave Dallas a lewk worthy of coming out for on Friday night.

And the Dallas audience, ever the proper event attendee, was perfectly dressed for the occasion. A visual Musgraves appreciated the turnout.

“Damn Dallas, you are lookin’ fine as hell tonight,” she said. “I see large cowboy hats. I see mini cowboy hats… I see sparkly, feathery cowboy hats. We didn’t come to play. We came to win.”

Musgraves opened with “Slow Burn,” Golden Hour’s track one, and yes ma’am that sure did get the entire crowd of The Bomb Factory, which was bursting at its capacity, plugged in and ready to celebrate the album’s well-deserved success.

“OK, so needless to say,” Musgraves confessed. “I have been waiting a long time to come and celebrate back home with everybody.”

And celebrate she did. During her hour-plus set, Musgraves gave the Dallas crowd everything it came to see, including her now infamous cover of Selena’s “Coma la Flor” complete with a dramatic intro that was first gifted to our ears during her stop at the Houston Rodeo. She also performed a smooth cover of Brooks & Dunn’s “Neon Moon” that even had me doing that Shaquille O’Neal shoulder shimmy.

Truth speak, if you haven’t listened to Kacey Musgraves’ latest record, there might be something chemically wrong with you and seeking guidance from your doctor or personal shaman is not only suggested but vehemently requested.

With friends and family in attendance, the 30-year-old Musgraves proved once again that she is the kind of magic the world needs these days. Through her signature tongue-in-cheek lyrics, a band so talented it’s beyond mathematic contemplation, and a sense of optimism that makes all of life’s yikes fade away, she kept our focus solely on what connects us: the music.

Before closing the show with the high-energy “High Horse,” Musgraves gave the crowd her latest single — and my go-to Car Karaoke track — “Rainbow.” But truly, it’s my favorite track on the record. I’m not saying it makes me cry every time I hear it, but I’m also not not saying it makes me cry every time I hear it. So, yeah. Glad we cleared that up.

But Reed, what was the most remarkable part of the show?!!

Well, what I found personally remarkable was seeing someone with such a voice and such a clear vision, have an entire audience sing along with them. In my opinion, this would be an award even higher than any academy can give.

It’s human connection. And you can tell that it is one Musgraves doesn’t take lightly, but rather one she holds near and dear to her rhinestoned heart.
