Selena to Get Her Own Special Texas Holiday if a Lawmaker Has Her Way

Iconic Singer Was Murdered at Age 23, But Her Unbelievable Legacy Only Grows Stronger

One Texas lawmaker is looking to celebrate the Queen of Tejano like never before. Beloved Bidi Bidi Bom Bom crooner Selena may get her own special Lone Star State holiday.

Representative Ana-Maria Ramos filed a bill to officially designate April 16 “Selena Quintanilla Perez Day.” It’s a little bit of a mouthful, but the incredible influential Latin artist, who was murdered in 1995 at age 23, is certainly deserving of her own day.

April 16 is the proposed day because that is Selena’s birthday.

It’s been more than 20 years since Selena’s death, and her legacy is arguably stronger than. Burgeoning mega star Kacey Musgraves just paid a touching tribute to the late singer at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s opening night.

Musgraves took to the stage for a soulful rendition of “Como La Flor,” which Selena famously performed at the Astrodome. The crowd loved it — and so did the icon’s sister. Suzette Quintanilla posted a clip of the performance on Instagram shortly after it ended.

“Awww this makes me wanna shed a tear! Takes me back… A Big Big Thank you @spaceykacey for the love at the Houston rodeo tonite with that SELENA Y LOS DINOS jam!”

Now, Selena may get a Texas holiday too.

In order for House Bill 2492 to pass, it has to be voted out of the house committee and approved by the full house, followed by the senate and governor.

“April 16 is Selena Quintanilla Perez Day in memory of the contributions to Tejano music of Selena Quintanilla Perez, an award-winning singer and recording artist. Selena Quintanilla Perez Day may be regularly observed by appropriate ceremonies and activities,” the bill reads.

This isn’t the first time fans have sought to honor Selena by setting aside a special day. Former Governor George W. Bush announced “Selena Day” in Texas on April 16, 1995, just weeks after her death.

In 2017, Selena received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the city of Los Angeles dubbed November 3rd “Selena Day.”

Currently, there’s only one other Texas state holiday that honors a sole individual. August 27th is “Lyndon Baines Johnson Day.”

Many fans are buoyed by word that Selena could soon have her own officially recognized state holiday. It comes just a few weeks before the Houston Rodeo will celebrate Go Tejano day on March 10 with a performance by Los Tigres del Norte.

Selena was revered for bringing Tejano music, which was male-dominated when she first started out, to the mainstream. She’s earned her special holiday.

Here’s hoping Texas makes a day of it.
