The Best Places To Play Mahjong in Dallas

The Lone Star State shines as a thriving hub in the world of American mahjong.

With countless Texas-based tile companies and an abundance of non-profit events centered around the game (like Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center’s Mahjong For a Mission, one of our favorites), it’s hard to find Dallasites who aren’t addicted to the ancient game that’s a mix of luck and strategy. We recently shared our favorite spots to play mahjong in Cowtown, so it’s only right that we round up our favorite places in the Big D to swirl those beautiful hand-painted tiles.

The Charleston Club

4706 West Lovers Lane

Last fall, local philanthropic and community leader Lisa Rocchio opened the doors of The Charleston Club, a modern mahjong parlor in a charming bungalow on West Lovers Lane. Designed as a chic space for players to gather together for community, connection, and curated retail (it is Dallas after all!), The Charleston Club is open daily. Players can reserve a table (in the room of their choice!) online or host a private party in the space. In addition, check The Charleston Club’s online calendar for in-house events, lessons, and open play. This month, the parlor is even hosting an August Mahjong League.

Sadelle’s

1 Highland Park Village

Every other Wednesday from 3 pm to 5 pm, Sadelle’s Dallas in Highland Park Village invites skilled players to join its Mahjong Social, hosted in collaboration with Stephanie Brink (a.k.a “The Marvelous Mrs. Mahjong”) and Dallas-based mahjong company (and American mahjong OGs) The Mahjong Line. Each $75 player ticket includes a spritz and light bites served tableside. You can RSVP solo, or for our entire quad. Enjoy playing against other experienced players in one of the prettiest restaurants in Dallas!

Bam Bird Boutique

11837 Judd Court, Suite 106D

Located near the intersection of Forest Lane and Greenville Avenue, Bam Bird Boutique, which Lake Highlands friends and neighbors Meredith Ajello and Robin Offutt founded, offers options for open play, as well as semi-private events and full buyouts for up to 40 players. Because Bam Bird Boutique produces its own tile lines and a full range of accessories, they supply all the gear. While you’re there, check out all the goods for sale in their showroom. We’re particularly fond of playing with the East Meets West tile set; the jokers are dancing pandas, after all.

Asian Mint

11617 N. Central Expressway, Suite 135

Start your week off right at Asian Mint’s Forest Lane location for Mahjong Mondays! All skill levels are welcome for open play and lessons, paired alongside your Thai favorites (Pad See iew for me!). On September 21, come from 5-6:30 pm to learn to play Chinese Mahjong before open play from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Sign up online to let them know you’re coming, and remember to bring your own tiles and National Mah Jong League cards.

Peace Love Mahjong

10218 E. Northwest Highway

For the Old Lake Highlands crew, Peace Love Mahjong is conveniently located on the east side of White Rock Lake off of E. Northwest Highway. In addition to its storefront, Peace Love Mahjong has an event space called Where Dragons Play that has a chock-full calendar of events and options for guided lessons and private events. Interested in sharpening your skills with consistent play? Consider signing up for the Fall Season of The Mahjong League, which begins on September 14 from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. The six-week competitive league, which is limited to 28 experienced players, runs through October 26 at Where Dragons Play.

The cost is $200; participants can register online.

Bespoke House of Mahjong

1601 Kelly Boulevard in Carrollton 

Like the other locations, Bespoke House of Mahjong, located in Carrollton, offers open play, lessons, and private events. What sets them apart? At Bespoke House of Mahjong, you’ll find 12(!) custom-designed automatic mahjong tables. (If you’ve never played at an automatic table, it is FUN!
