Nail Art Makes a Comeback
New Trend Echoes the ’90s with a High-Fashion Twist
By Ashley Coley //
What was once cool in the late 1990s and early 2000s seems to be making a statement again. Old school trends such as chokers, jelly sandals, and slip dresses have resurrected, and now nail art joins the comeback crew (at least for this season).
For years it felt decorative manicures were dying a slow painful death. This season, the trend burst back onto the scene in full force though, and we’re tempted to pick up our striping pens again.
From simple black nails with gold dots shown at Alice + Oliva (A/W 2017) to the elaborate geometric shapes shown at Novis (A/W 2017), there is a style for every type of occasion.
Sometimes, simplicity is key. Feeling lazy? Take a cue from Tibi‘s Fashion Week show, and add a pop of color to a single nail. Or amp up your look with two-toned neutral colors by emulating the chevron vibe shown at Jenny Packham (A/W17).
If you want to make a bold statement, look no further than Jeremy Scott. His Fashion Week show showcased orange-red nails that can only be described as L.A. summer vibes. The vibrant nails were topped with a gold star, making for the perfect statement look.
“The classic red nail has just taken an unexpected turn. Soaked in the L.A. sun and worn on a medium length almond, we’re making it cool to wear red again … and of course, adding our own twist!” Jan Arnold, CND Co-founder and Style Director, said about Jeremy Scott’s CND-produced nail art during Fashion Week.
Libertine‘s Fashion Week show also wowed, proving clothes aren’t the only aspect that can draw your attention on the runway. Libertine complemented his collection with 25 elaborate nail art styles — which featured feathers and gold chains — inspired by the flamboyant artistic styles of the Roman Gypsies shown on the runway.
Whatever your style may be, we’ve rounded up nine of our favorite nail trends from this past season. Flip through the styles above, and let us know your favorites in the comment section below.
