This Austin Cool Jewelry Designer Loves a Tuxedo and an Aggressive Spin

Preferential Treatment With Nak Armstrong

BY // 04.26.19

Your editorial team here at PaperCity Dallas always has a million-plus questions for the jet-setters who make their way through our tiny hamlet.

With that in mind, we decided to create our master list of queries to pose to those we desire to know better. It is aptly dubbed “Preferential Treatment.”

Our first out of the gate was the darling designer Esteban Cortazar who was in town recently. Today meet Nak Armstrong who is visiting Dallas for a trunk show and luncheon at Forty Five Ten. The Armstrong event continues through tomorrow (Saturday, April 27) at the downtown Dallas flagship.

Armstrong launched his handmade jewelry line in Austin in 2011. Through his innovative departures from typical metalworking techniques and an experimental eye that is equal parts classic and avant-garde, Nak Armstrong’s CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) award-winning work continues to push the envelope and thus find legions of devotees.

We are sure you will be dying to see some of his creations — if you haven’t already been a fan — after reading his witty responses. So make your way to  Forty Five Ten.

The zip code you call home: 78704 – Travis Heights.

Style of residence: Modern French farmhouse with a dash of mid-century.

Pajamas or in the buff: Somewhere in between.

Early or late riser: Early…. quite reluctantly.

Coffee or tea: Almond cappuccino.

Morning beauty/grooming ritual: I wash, scrub, and moisturize my face with Prevage and then apply ample sunscreen. But the best part of my mornings is an aggressive spin class followed by a super healthy organic green shake with fresh ginger, turmeric, spinach etc. I feel like I can conquer the world after I’ve sweated it out and eaten healthy.

Evening beauty/grooming ritual: Cuddle with our Italian Greyhound Georgie and then plenty of sleep.

Go-to daytime ensemble: Brunello Cucinelli button down, Hugo Boss jeans, Kîton or Osklen blazer, Lanvin tennies.

Ideal evening look: Saint Laurent tux with bowtie…. I seem to pick up one on every shopping trip. Maybe it’s an overreaction to the super casual Austin norm.

One thing you always keep in mind when getting dressed: Matching is rarely interesting; keep it fresh and unexpected.

Your happy place destination: Africa. I don’t get there often enough but when I do it’s as if nothing else exists.

The hotel you call your home-away-from home: Mercer Hotel. We spend a lot of time in New York (since that’s where we develop and manufacture the collection) and we got married at the Mercer.

Travel bag: LV overnight bag.

Last person you cocktail’ed with and what was your poison: A group of friends and my husband, Walter, at the Contemporary Austin Annual Dinner; Vesper Martini.

Dream concert: George Michael…. I had always wanted to see him in concert and never had the chance.

Store where you wish you had an unlimited charge account: 1stdibs.com

Items currently on your coffee table: Coffee table books: Emeralds, L.A. Modern, Ann Demeulemeester  and Tord Boontje; an arrangement of cuttings from our garden, cerulean blue pottery, coral, and a huge jasper gemstone.

Last movie you saw: The Favourite sticks out in my mind…… so wicked good.

Hall pass for a dalliance: I better punt on this one.

Who would play you in the movie of your life (living or dead actor is fine): Adrien Brody.

If you weren’t in your current profession what would you be doing: Marine Biology or any kind of animal conservation.

Secret skill: I’m a trained patternmaker.

Guilty pleasure: Dessert of any kind.
