Tory Burch Makes Celebs Develop Full-Fledged Shoe Fetishes at Fashion Week: Wanderlust and Comfort Win Out

BY // 09.09.18

NEW YORK — Tory Burch unveiled her casual spring/summer 2019 collection of embroidered tunics, lace caftans, patterned trench coats, colorful cardigans, and chain link dresses before a star-studded audience in the outdoor garden of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. It was all so effortlessly elegant in the way that Burch has perfected to win a large and loyal following.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about the shoes.

Many of the models wore a new Tory Burch canvas hightop sneaker trimmed in colorful rubber resembling a duck boot, only in Crayon colors of violet blue, laser lemon, outrageous orange, and forest green, with matching cotton laces. They perfectly captured the current craze for athleisure wear, even when worn with flowy long dresses or crisp Safari suits, giving stylish women the opportunity to pick comfort over the pain of sky-high stilettos.

Looking over at the starry front row, I noticed that several of the celebs were on top of the trend. Model Karolina Kurvova wore a pair of white trainers with a maxi dress and the Tory Burch Metallic Pig mini bag, while The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira sported silver sneakers with a mesh black dress dotted with stars and Japanese actress Hikari Mori wore white sneakers with a print caftan.

Oscar winner Julianne Moore paired Tory Sport retro stripe sneakers with a tuxedo stripe blazer and pants (at 10 am in the morning). On the way out after the show, she remarked that she was racing to catch a plane to the Toronto International Film Festival so her footwear seemed a particularly apt choice.

Burch has pioneered comfortable footwear with the wildly popular Reva ballet flat named for her mother, Reva Robinson, who sat on the front row while the classic Simon & Garfunkel hit, “Mrs. Robinson,” played on the sound system. And these canvas sneakers seemed to fit in with the relaxed theme as the collection was a tribute to her parents, Reva and deceased husband Buddy Robinson, whose adventurous life inspired Burch’s latest collection.

“Every summer they boarded a steam ship and spent six weeks sailing from Italy and Greece to Morocco and Spain. Their wanderlust has been a constant inspiration for me,” Burch explained in her program notes.

In addition to other wearable and stylish shoes (sandals with a circular mirror detail, simple flats, and a lace-up ankle bootie with a jute stacked heel), the collection was filled with laid-back looks that can easily be packed in a suitcase for a long trip without fears of getting too wrinkled or too tiresome.

Loose, flowing dresses, cotton tunics, oversized cardigans and wide-brimmed hats all lean toward the practical side, while there’s a hint of the exotic in a Moroccan raffia and linen coat, and a caftan trimmed with gold sequined sparkle. Even if you don’t have the time or the money for a leisurely trip in the Mediterranean, Burch offers an accessible escape for a fraction of the price.
