Paris Jewels Shown Off In a Stunning Memorial Mansion — Van Cleef & Arpels Continues to Embrace Houston, Building On Its New River Oaks District Home
The Art of Crafting Unforgettable Pieces By Hand

Fresh on the gilded heels of Van Cleef & Arpels’ new 5,000-square-foot home in River Oaks District, the Paris-based maison once again showed its affection for Houston with a breathtaking Signatures event in one of the city’s most stunning mansions.
The invitation-only event filled multiple rooms of the grand Memorail mansion, offering an intimate look at legacy pieces synonymous with Van Cleef & Arpels, including the innovative Zip necklace, the delicately woven Ludo bracelet and delightfully playful fairy and ballerina clips.
Jewelry lovers wandered through the space as if touring a fine art museum, with the Caribbean blue lap pool of the mega mansion sparkling in the background. Each installation showcased pieces sent directly from Van Cleef & Arpels, chosen for their history, beauty and detailed craftsmanship.

It was a celebration of artisanal luxury and a gift to local Van Cleef & Arpels devotees, who slipped on their Alhambra jewelry as an homage to the brand.
“Houston is an important market for Van Cleef & Arpels, and one where we have built meaningful relationships with clients over many decades,” Van Cleef & Arpels Americas CEO and president Helen King says. “Following the recent expansion of our River Oaks District boutique, bringing Signatures to Houston felt like a natural opportunity to further celebrate the maison’s heritage, creativity and savoir-faire with the local community.”
From Paris With Skill
Van Cleef & Arpels brought not only archival pieces, but also two master craftspeople from its Paris workshop. Morning sun wrapped the workroom in soft light, giving everyone a closer look at the intricate work needed to create each piece. Much like a couture gown, each piece of jewelry is carefully handmade, with some taking up to 800 hours to complete.
One of the craftspeople disassembled the iconic Zip necklace for us, transforming it from a necklace into a bracelet. Nearly 20 years into her career at Van Cleef & Arpels, this craftswoman is one of the small team of experts who create the Zip necklaces. She shared that it takes the jeweler 400 hours, the setter 330 hours and the polisher 70 hours to complete just one.
It was fascinating to watch this artisians’ hands work so deftly on the tiny elements of each piece.

It’s easy to take the humble zipper for granted, but it was an ingenious idea when Gideon Sundback patented it in 1917. When Renée Puissant, daughter of the founding couple and Van Cleef & Arpels’ artistic director, explored using the zip fastener to create jewelry, an iconic design was born. It even has a royal connection. The idea is said to have been suggested to Puissant by the Duchess of Windsor, who was fascinated by the new fastener.
Fast forward to 1950, and the design became a reality, with options. It could be worn as a necklace or as a bracelet. That inclination to elevate a piece of jewelry is intrinsic to this jewelry’s DNA.
“Innovation has always been central to the maison’s creative vision,” King says. “The Zip necklace is a wonderful example, transforming an everyday function into an ingenious jewel that can itself transform from a necklace into a bracelet. This balance of technical ingenuity, delicacy and imagination remains at the heart of how we approach each new creation.”
Other pieces on display showed the same clever technical innovation. Patented in 1933, the Mystery Set technique introduced a new way of setting precious stones, sliding meticulously cut gems one by one onto fine gold rails. Once completed, the jewelry glimmers with intensity.
Many Van Cleef & Arpels pieces lean into whimsy, nature, dance and enduring love.

In an elegant try-on room, glittering jewels enticed lucky attendees who were encouraged to don the pieces with the help of the black gloved Van Cleef & Arpels team. Among the items on display was the Lady Arpels Pont des Amoureux Soirée watch, its face showing two lovers meeting on a bridge, marking the time with a kiss twice a day, and the Liane Long Necklace, an elegant, adjustable, contemporary creation finished with tassels.
The blend of past and present indicates where Van Cleef & Arpels is headed as it continues to evolve.
“The Maison’s High Jewelry Signature Collections bring together themes that have defined the maison’s distinctive style, from the Zip and Ludo to our Feminine Figures and Flora pieces and our Mystery Set technique,” King says. “What is particularly special is the dialogue between patrimony and contemporary creations, showcasing how the same inspiration, craftsmanship and techniques continue to inspire the maison today.”
