Vintage Fashion Force Finally Comes to Dallas — and the Buzz is Real: The Inside Story of What Goes Around Comes Around

BY // 04.12.18

What Goes Around Comes Around is the leader in the vintage industry. If you haven’t heard of it, phone a stylish friend — because he or she definitely has. The brand’s longtime store on Broadway in New York City has been a destination and must-see attraction for pedestrians and celebrities alike since 1993.

Walk in planning to not buy one thing, and come out with a classic Louis Vuitton overnight bag, a red suede Gucci backpack, a Chanel baseball hat, and a Dolce & Gabbana turquoise leather trench with fur trim. The one-of-a-kind, hard-to-find merch is a fashion-treasure-hunter’s dream.

Founder Seth Weisser decided to take his famous store out of the Big Apple and spread the love. Recently, the store debuted a What Goes Around Comes Around x MARKET Pop-Up in Highland Park Village. The pop-up had shoppers swooning over the display of luxury designer handbags of every color, size, shape, and decade. Between the hustle and bustle of the pop-up, we had the chance to chat with Weisser to discuss his perspective on “vintage” and what he thinks is the hottest bag to own right now.

The fashion industry is in massive flux. How has the luxury-vintage business been impacted?

The industry is constantly changing and new creative directors/designers do impact the brands in big ways. Clearly with Gucci, When Alessandro Michele took the reins he helped transform Gucci into the hottest global brand at this time. Now, Céline just named Heidi Slimane the new head, which will certainly spike the demand and interest in a brand that has been a bit on the down side the past few years.

We just saw Louis Vuitton name Virgil Abloh as its men’s artistic director, which a great moment to see the evolution of the streetwear world into the luxury.

Best vintage bag to invest in right now?

When investing in a bag it’s quite important to look for timeless classics such as the Hermes Birkins or Kellys, which always appreciate — or Chanel classics, which go up in value every year as Chanel raises prices annually.

The one piece of vintage designer jewelry every fashionable woman should have in her closet?

True vintage-era Chanel is a must have. [Pieces from] the gold-plated era, which ended at the end of the 1990s, are such a fashion statement. It’s easy to mix and match them.

A great necklace paired with earring will never go out of style.

There’s a bit of debate about how old something must be to call it “vintage”… In terms of What Goes Around Comes Around, how do you define vintage?

It’s certainly very subjective on the definition as it applies to fashion and accessories. We look at items more than 10 years old as vintage in this context and for apparel we consider 20 years vintage.

Of the most recent collections, what pieces (clothing and/or accessories) do you think are going to be the most valuable as they become vintage?

From recent collections, look for limited-edition and collaboration pieces. These tend to sell out and become more valuable over time.

For example, Chanel’s graffiti backpack from 2014 was a huge sensation and is selling for more than twice its [original] cost.

Also, last year’s Vuitton X supreme collaboration sold out and is now selling a substantially more than it cost new.
