The Dean of Texas Architecture’s Own House Hits the Market

$1.18 Million for a Piece of History?

BY // 09.29.17

Any home that late Texas architect Frank Welch designed is bound to be extraordinary. But one particular Frank Welch project that just hit the market is especially iconic: The legendary architect’s personal home in Dallas is now for sale for $1.18 million.

Welch, who passed away at age 90 in June, was lauded as The Dean of Texas Architecture. One of the Southwest’s most important architects, he played a big part in Texas’ modern architecture movement in the 1950s. His local works include The Lamplighter School, First United Methodist Church in Richardson, and several stunning modern homes such as the Shamoon residence near Turtle Creek and the Dillon house off the Katy Trail.

His own residence reflects his restrained aesthetic and penchant for minimalism. Built in 1997, the two-story, duplex-style home is a modest 2,932-square-feet on a 4,356-square-foot lot. A modern balcony with floor-to-ceiling windows is the most ornate feature of the timeless exterior. The front yard is non existent (no upkeep required) and the backyard is occupied by a shaded swimming pool. A private gate opens onto the lovely Katy Trail.

Inside, tall ceilings, skylights and an open floor plan make the home bright and airy. The first level includes two bedrooms, an office space and a full bath. The master bedroom is located on the second floor, with his and hers baths and closets.

The living room, dining room, kitchen, breakfast nook, and an additional full bath are also located on the second level. The narrow, no-frills kitchen may put form over function, but such is the life of an artist.

The light-flooded living room features an understated fireplace and a balcony. Around the back of the home, a matching balcony leads to the pool by way of a spiral staircase. If you’d prefer a more leisurely descent, there is, in fact, an elevator in the home.
