A Texas Company’s Ancient Weaving Techniques Produce Something Fresh
By Rebecca Sherman //
Abrash Decorative Rug Gallery’s new Abrash Modern line merges the 37-year-old Dallas company’s renowned ancient weaving techniques with a freshened aesthetic.
Two years in the making, the collection debuts this month, at the hand of Abrash owners Fara and Alireza Kayone, who commissioned designers across the globe to produce 95 organic and geometric designs, all of which can be customized.
“We wanted something special and individual,” says Fara, “but also affordable for younger people.”
The look may be contemporary, but the quality is positively heirloom. Made in Nepal by master weavers from hand-spun wool, silk, and bamboo, a single 9-by-12-foot rug can take a year to create.
Abrash employs child-free labor and uses vegetable dyes for all its rugs.
