College Football Gameday Style Is Back — The Best Texas Team Outfits, Boots, and Accessories To Shop

What To Wear For Longhorns, Mustangs, Horned Frogs, Aggies, and Red Raiders

By //

One of the most sacred days of the entire calendar year is this Saturday, August 29. College football returns.

In Texas, of course, college football is OUR CULTURE… even for me, a PaperCity editor. I bleed Carolina blue, but with burnt orange DNA. So, in my family, we simply say “Hook ‘Em Heels.”

What a fan wears for gameday is half the fun. In preparation for The Big Day, I’ve done some shopping. This one’s for you Longhorns, Mustangs, Horned Frogs, Aggies, and Red Raiders. Yes, it’s unbearably hot. Yes, it’s too soon to indulge in a Pumpkin Spice Latte or to light my favorite fall candle. But, yes, fall *is* coming. The football schedule declares it to be true! So, let’s shop!

For the Longhorns

Talk about a legacy! Both Lucchese and The University of Texas were founded in 1883. Beyond a home state and birth year, the two titans share a legacy “built on craftsmanship, excellence, and tradition.” It makes sense, then, that Lucchese Bootmaker once again partnered with The University of Texas Athletics Department on an elite collection of boots and accessories for game day (and beyond). Our favorites? The Bevo ($1,195), a men’s boot handcrafted in burnt orange full-quill ostrich leather, and the women’s Western Snap Blouse ($275). It perfectly balances timeless tailoring with the cowgirl spirit of a classic pearl snap. The contrast piping sings!

At Tyler’s, this burnt orange Kennedy Skirt ($124) from J. Marie features white floral embroidery. The mini length suits the triple-digit temperatures, but it would be equally charming paired with a sweater come fall (or “false fall!”). Hook ’em!

For the Mustangs

Let’s promenade on the Boulevard? Poolside’s rattan and leather The Box Bag ($425), available at Forty Five Ten, is perfect for tailgating.  And for the Mustang ladies, perhaps some sapphires? Bachendorf’s, which recently welcomed Marina B to its enviable roster of brands, offers a robust selection of sapphire pieces, and this platinum channel set sapphire eternity band ($2,650) seems like the perfect addition to a glamorous pony’s gameday lineup.

Is this horse’s tail too on the nose? *Neigh!* I’m obsessed with Vin.’s Cheval Clutch ($585), available at MARKET in Highland Park Village. The horse is made of natural wood with a black tassel tail and black suede interior.

For the Horned Frogs

Many of my Fort Worth friends are currently headed to Dublin, Ireland, where their beloved Texas Christian University Horned Frogs will play the Tar Heels from my alma mater, the University of North Carolina, this Saturday. I am not normally one to experience FOMO, but I’m regretting not booking that flight to Ireland, especially during this Texas heat wave! Made for the international game, No Rivals’ TCU Aer Lingus hat ($40) features a horned frog with a four-leaf clover in its mouth. Admittedly, I think my Tar Heels might need the luck of the Irish to pull off a win this Saturday!

A few days ago, CITY Boots, which is owned by Fort Worth’s Lizzy Bentley, revealed on Instagram three pairs of purple boots that are in-store exclusives. It feels impossible to choose a favorite, but these metallic dark purple shorties feel SO TCU. Visit the showroom in Fort Worth to see them in person and pre-order your favorite pair!

CHIEFFALO Americana rebuilds vintage belt buckles, and this three horned frogs belt buckle ($450) feels like an archival piece for someone who lives and breathes TCU. Visit CHIEFFALO Americana at their Camp Bowie flagship location in Cowtown.

Based in Dallas but hecho en Mexico, local favorite Mi Golondrina reliably releases the perfect gameday collection every August. The Andrea Short Dress ($355) in Maroon Stripe is perfect for long and hot days standing in Kyle Field.

Of course, you can’t go wrong with the appropriately named Gig Em Top ($78) and Gig Em Shorts ($78) from The Impeccable Pig.

For the Red Raiders

The Dolly Jacket ($165) from Tecovas comes in both black and red, making it perfect for the Lubbock crew. (Never forget when Tecovas collaborated with Chili’s on a pair of cowboy boots made from their red leather booths. They sold out instantly. Iconic.)

This spring, J. McLaughlin partnered with interior designer Mark D. Sikes on a perfectly executed collection that allowed my Americana summer dreams to set sail. Celebrating the collaboration with an in-store party, Sikes told PaperCity that the red pieces stood out in Dallas. “I think the red color in the collection really resonated with the Dallas crowd because it is bold and happy.” When we first saw the red Charlotte dress ($448), I immediately thought it would be the perfect gameday dress for Raider ladies.

How could I possibly do a gameday style roundup and not include a pair of Miron Crosby cowboy boots? The brand, created by brilliant Dallas-based sisters Sarah Means and Lizzie Means Duplantis, invented the category of fashion-forward luxury cowboy boots. Nearly 10 years later, they still stand in a league of their own. The extra-tall Kate boots ($2,395) in black feel both glamorous and edgy. Guns up!

Right now, everyone is tied at 0-0. May the odds be ever in your favor!
